OK...set aside all the fearful horrors of days...Days of (limitless) leftover Turkey sandwiches, and let's noodle-up on this Think Tank speculation: After both of our HD..."Highly Dee-lusional" AC stations...MY & MAGIC...hang the dumb, but festive Red Sweaters back in the closet,...What will each do to begin their 2012 run?
I have suggested that MAGIC might've went all Christmas to smoke screen a major format upgrade. Also, MY may have took the jingle route to fine tune their new format. There are quite a few speculations, and even if none of us get it right, let's sip our spiked hot beverages, and share what we think...
 
Magic doesn't need to do anything, other than updating the music (they play the same songs over and over!). They should sit comfortably as the only mainstream AC in the market.

MY could greatly benefit by removing Delilah after Christmas. That's the worst thing about the station.
 
It's amusing how rock and country guys always think the AC stations are inches away from abandoning the format. My just made a major change in 2011, and that finally leaves Magic plenty of room as the only Mainstream AC station in the market. It'll be back to business as usual after Santa.
 
^ Yeah....properly executed mainstream AC is doing perfectly fine, especially in the Southeast. There are some exceptions, but the format is still successful. I still find it hard to believe that after years of trying to play catch-up to 102.5, Magic became the only Mainstream AC.
 
We know what all the other FM's are going to do...re-done-dunt status quo, and it could be that the two AC's pick-up right where they left off. However, neither of the two are successful! Peee-u-nee little struggling single digit graces from the God,..."Arbitronus"...so the handful there can pinch a paycheck. If MY had been successful, then they would not have made their big move, a move that distanted them from the very reflection of MAGIC. Neither are successful, and changes for both are on the agenda for 2012. Look for Airstaff to be added at MAGIC. Both AC's would have placed higher, years ago, if they would've deleted all of those worthless Country-crossover records. Airplay for that Shit created format confusion, and solidified the recurrent bottom line for the two Countrys. If they are marketed as a Country artist,...no AC airplay! It was a compromise that both are still paying for.
 
Where does Magic need to add airstaff? Last I heard, they had live mornings, mid-days, afternoons, and weekends (9a-7p).

My has not been around in its current incarnation long enough to justify more changes, IMO. Magic still needs to see what being the only Mainstream AC will do for them. I don't see any changes on either station until at least later in the year.

I don't care for a lot of the country crossovers, either, but you will see them on every AC station in the country. It's not just here.
 
I think Magic is in dire need of some new jingles, a bright new Reelworld jingle package! Drop all the country music and freshen up their older music!

I agree on both points. They've had those jingles since the mid 2000s. Some of the country crossovers belong, but the older music they play is really tired. I believe they update the playlist once a year, aside from adding "new" songs.

OK,...the following is Professional...Business, not personal: Aside from Lee Alexander, MAGIC does not have any Air Talent,...just accessable button pushers. Crop Lee into the correct daypart, 10a-3p, give him some better music, and leave him alone...he can operate. Mornings: Heidi's daughter, Lauren is worth keeping, but if you don't team her with someone that has some experience, then she's gonna get blamed with the next failure. The two should work 6a-10a, as slated by Arbitron. Afternoon: Stacie Bartro has good energy, but way too Churpy. The playlist needs a major overhaul, but even after that, Stacie, alone--by herself, sadly, will not ever pull the PM Drive ratings that are possible. John Tesh, 7p-12mid: This is about the damn dumbest bad waste of good airtime that I have ever had the displeasure of hearing. Five hours of telling the listeners how stupid they are, and here's how you can change that. "Scientist say that the best laxatives are...Natural...green leafy vegatables.".
Gee, thanks John...for a keen grasp of the obvious! Nothing says remember me, quite like Spinnage Lasagne! No, MAGIC is not successful. Their ratings are pee-u-nee. They need a playlist overhaul, and they need to hire some experienced Air Talent.

did someone forget their meds? i think that you will see 98.9 try to closer align themselves with 102.5 after christmas. the past couple of trends have favored 102.5. christmas might save the book for 98.9 and prop up a 4 book average but at some point the mainstream ac will need to evolve as the current artists become irrelevent.

If you compare Magic to many other mainstream AC's in the country (especially those in smaller markets with no classic hits station), they have evolved more than a lot of them. They rarely play 1970s music anymore and play most new AC music. I noticed they started adding more new songs after MY made their adjustment.

I agree that the air talent is less than stellar, but what station around here truly has a solid airstaff lineup? I'm not saying it's great by any means, but I can think of worse than Magic
 
Since I haven't bothered too much with MY or Magic in the past until MY changed its format to be more Hot AC, I have a stupid question. Do these stations typically turn back to their regular playlists on Dec. 26 or do they continue it until after the New Year?

Anxious to get back to some real music (particularly on MY).

That's what I thought. Just didn't want to get my hopes up come Monday morning. I'll be anxious to see how MY and Magic come out the door. Still hoping MY comes back with one big thing kicked out the door -- Delilah.

I'll be interested to see what current hits MY adds - hopefully some new ones - I know they had been very slow, but had gotten better at adding new songs before Christmas music. They need to add "Stereo Hearts", "Brighter Than The Sun", "Not Over You", "Just A Kiss", and "The One That Got Away", if nothing else.

I doubt Magic will sound any different, really.

Definately agree that I hope they are quicker on new adds. But my biggest Christmas wish is still to not have to turn off the station just because it's 7 p.m.
 
Yeah, that would be nice - if Delilah isn't gone after Christmas (which just seems like a perfect time to ditch her, because she DOES fit with all Christmas), I don't think they'll ever remove her. Guess my post-7pm listening would be Chuck FM.
 
Less than 12 more hours and Christmas music will be just a memory. I start listening to Christmas music about 5 days before Christmas. I've listened to it on both AC's and Magic 98.9 gets my nod. Better music variety, and the station's sound fit better with the music than on MY.
 
Forget what I said about Delilah. A lot of CC stations didn't run her last night. No changes at either AC, but MY really isn't sounding 'fresh' at all - same old currents as before Christmas, and they just played Gloria Gaynor. Sigh. Seems if they were ever going to get closer to Hot AC, they would have now. They still consider "Secrets", "Rolling In The Deep", and "Perfect" as currents that deserve to be amongst the station's most played.

I've been enjoying ChuckFM most of the day.
