afternoon announcer on 93.3

Couldn't help but notice that the afternoon announcer on 93.3 (whose name I do not know because I have never heard her ID herself) was promoting the big downtown New Year's Eve party and its move from lower Broadway to the Bicentennial Mall. On more than one occasion, I heard her say that it was moving from lower Broad "across the river" to Bicentennial Mall. Of course, all the locals know that lower Broad and the Mall are on the SAME side of the river!

Also, when promoting upcoming shows at the Schermerhorn, she never actually says the name "Schermerhorn." She probably has no idea how to pronounce it! She usually just refers to the venue as the "symphony center."

That said, I still believe that voice-tracking has come light years from when I used to do so at a small station in west TN back in the early '90s!

Firepoint, Happy 2017 - it is not easy to say Schermerhorn for sure, but even worse to try to say "Demonbreun Street." It scares me to have to say it on air and I know how to say it. That may be one of the real pleasures of VTing. You can take 6,000 shots at getting it right. The poor woman probably has no local contact to help her get it right. I have to chuckle at things like getting the landmarks locations wrong. Virtually no one can get the street names or small towns right, if they don't live here.

Happy New Year to you, too, Tibbs, and you are spot on about the (mis)pronunciation of "Demonbreun." Fortunately, I heard this great ditty from Coyote McCloud while passing through, before I ever moved here!

Also noticed that Little Johnny on Hippie still seems to have trouble with "Tusculum." He keeps wanting to emphasize the middle syllable, but he has gotten better lately about pronouncing it correctly.

Lil Johnny is an awesome guy! I have to admit I was shocked when I first heard him. Quite the departure from most traffic folks. But you have to admit you listen very intently to what he says. Probably the most unique traffic in America. Better than when the good and honorable Hollywood drags through the traffic accident list. He was destined for more than traffic breaks.

As long as they don't rip through the traffic report so fast that I don't hear for sure whether anything affects me. By mentioning what parts of town the wrecks and tie-ups are in, it slows him (Johnny) down just enough that I can hear all the problem areas!

Fortunately, nothing too bad for me today. But we stayed home and "enjoyed" the snow here! Wifey's daycare was closed, and she worked from home at her other job here today.

I have since found out that the name of the afternoon announcer on 93.3 is Becky Shock. I got this from their website. Wouldn't have known her name otherwise, as I have never heard her ID herself on the air.

But more importantly, she apparently knows how to pronounce "Schermerhorn" now! She actually says "Schermerhorn Symphony Center" when promoting shows there, unlike what she was doing a few months ago. (I can't blame anyone who does not know how to pronounce "Schermerhorn" for wanting to avoid saying his name when talking about his namesake symphony hall when promoting shows there.)
