Afternoon Drive

Are some stations really missing a golden opportunity for PM drive? If you take a look at the non-urban, non-talk landscape (Dave, Star, B98, Q, 99X, Project) the only content driven afternoon drive show is Cindy and Ray. They do really well in the ratings and it is, as imagined, a positive driver for the Star Sales Department.

Should other stations consider full blown shows in the AM drive slot and why haven't we seen one of these frequencies put something wholly content driven up to go head-to-head with Cindy and Ray?

It seems to me that cost isn't a great excuse because if you started to pull a decent amount of listeners, sales could at the least cover the cost of the show. And, I have to imagine that since we have one of the longest commutes in the country, that PM drive has to be close to AM drive in total amount of people in their cars with their radios on...

Does this make any sense?

Yes, but in radio, that means nothing today. Radio still thinks that it's executives are rock stars and more important than it's show hosts. That may change in a few years or never. But not today. Nope.

Are you an unimportant jock? There are a lot of stations that run just fine with a computer doing all the "jocking" but still require a person to sell and run the station.

Sure, they run fine... nobody listens, but they run fine...

Agree with the top poster. The Braves own minor league teams so that they can replace Andruw Jones when the time comes. Cindy & Ray arent going to do morning drive at Star this time, but they certainly could have stepped in if they'd been asked. And could do it if the Marco thing doesnt work.

It's been a great success for Star as a branding tool, for promotions, for ratings, for different programming and....they didnt have to pay C&R any more as a pair than it costs to get a single veteran from another market. How much do you think they were paying Cindy when she started at Star? I'd guess well less than $100k. Dollar-for-dollar, she's probably the most profitable jock in town. (And I think she's lousy! Shows what I know.)

I wish there were other alternatives for afternoon drive. I like the "show" concept. I wonder if a station would go with two person shows throughout the whole day.

Star's sister (for now) station WLNK/Charlotte does.

If Toucher and Rich syndicate on afternoon drive, they would run circles around Cindy and Ray.
...which would compliment Atlanta radio always running in circles...

...and this constant idea that T&R will come to Atlanta. Let's go 'round in circles...

...and the thought that Cindy & Ray would care if Toucher & Rich showed up in Atlanta... ? Two completely different demos. Why would they care? C & R are consistently #2 behind Ryan with females, and T&R would target males.

Wait a minute... for the right cluster, that would be profitable! Hmmmm...
