Afternoon Drive

I'm wondering and I know all my knowledgable friends here could add some input. Do you beleive that this market could
handle a Afternoon Drive Show with Multiple personalities (Not one person acting as Sybil) and have life with sponsors
and of course numbers? I know it would depend on the sdhow but I can't think of a show in this market doing this. There are
some good drive home shows but wonder if this is a direction tucson would support. In some markets, afternoon drive tends to
be the big daypart for revenue and ratings.

Tough to say. The last multiple person afternoon drive show that I can recall (at least on a music station) is Davin and Anna at KRQ in 2000 & 2001 and it was an underperformer in the ratings. They hired Ken Carr back then undoubtedly for less and got bigger ratings and that gave them a bigger net profit in the end. That's what it is really all about these days is what it costs versus what it can make.

Speaking of Ken Carr, Journal put him on KGMG and it's having a run in the ratings. Crazy wacky stuff.

Wasn't it 2000-01 about the same time a lot of stations did the afternoon team thing? As I remember it was a trend that did poorly in most markets, sans a few larger ones here and there.

I was really just thinking about the market in general, especially with whats going on right now with Savage. I know we can't compare this market to LA but I remember some real success with afternoon talkers like John and Ken and even for some time Tom Leeeeykis. Was Greaseman on Afternoons back east? I know there were some bigger personalities that didn't compete with Howard that did ok. I remember Davin and Anna - they were enjoyable to listen to as a team but I would think it would be like San Diego where the shows were WAAY far away from the morning formats.

Thats great for Ken, he seems to me to be somebody who connects and is always nice when he's out and about.

considering the audience and the right promotion, I would like to think they could do ok. Marketing..thats not the biggest part of the puzzle but it sure can make or break a show. What do you think most workers driving home are listening to, Satellite or local?

I was a listener of your former employer, but as of a couple of weeks ago, I'm listening solely to XM. I've given up on rock in Tucson because I won't support the management of any of the stations in that format. They've never gotten it musically, and when they "do" people the way the do, well, it's just too much for me. If "lack of growth" was the problem, the corrective action seems really weak. ??? Pretty clear to me it must have been only about money.

I've never been much for talk radio, but if you got something going I'd give it a listen. Especially if it had variety, including some tech stuff. You guys had developed a good repore in the morning. If music isn't going to carry the crowd, then the personalities have to...
