Afternoons WEEI/THE ZONE

If you don't listen to sports radio then this post probably isn't for you... That being said I know WEEI and The Zone 1510 are laughable when you compare their ratings and revenue. I know that the Zone's signal at night is a joke, and worse than some college radio stations! I know that "The Big Show" is #1 for their demo, blah blah blah. I want to put all of this aside for one minute....
I'm more looking for OPINIONS from people that have listened both of the afternoon drive shows. I once was a fan of "The Big Show", but recently I'm one of the very few who have switched to the Diehards. Does anyone else find the Big Show to be more than ever just a yelling match of topics that don't have much to do with the game? I took this from BostonSportsMedia.com. I think it sums up the EEI afternoon show as of late.

"This is saying alot, but yesterday's Big Show had to have been among the worst ever. They spent much of the afternoon arguing over the Edgar Renteria bunt from LAST WEEK, which was SUCCESSFUL. (Did Ordway's home theater break the night before, so he couldn't watch anything for "show prep"?) It reached a low point when Wendi Nix started screaming at Michael Felger in such a way that she has forever ruined my image of her."

Meanwhile I find the Diehards to be pretty insightful. Ryan Russillo is becoming one of my favorite Boston media members. There is some bantor back and forth but Russillo does a great job to keep the show focused. There aren't as many "drama topics either". Much more "sports talk" than "sports entertainment" talk. Any thoughts?

I'm not even a Red Sox fan - but I will still listen to the Big Show becuse I do find it entertaining (and it's better than anything else on the radio at drive time). I am a diehard fan of the Big Show durring Patriots season.

I like the big show - but yes, your right - they sometimes just argue with eachother and never get on a good topic.

The whole Bunt situation with Rent-a-Wreck was getting old . . .

I've listened to 'EEI for a number of years now, and overall love it. I liked Dakota when he was on in the morning (1510), but now since it's not a local show, I dont' like it, it's back to D & C. I do like the Diehards, and ofen flip between Ordway and them. And yes, for the most part it's a big shouting match, and a couple of the hosts they have on sometimes are just complete idiots. But I love Sean McAdam, gotta hear him whenever he is on. Felger is good alot, and Wendi Nix rocks!!!! But I don't listen to the Diehards as often, because who their lead in is, I can't put my radio on the station before 3 because he is just horrific to listen to, he totally does not have a voice for radio. Ryen Rusillo is good to listen to, along with John Anik. But I am a Sox guy, and since 'EEI is their flagship, they talk about it more.

Ya know what, I have to side with 'EEI. I haven't heard anything on The Zone that has sparked my interest.

Not to mention I listen to the last hour, hour and a half of "The Big Show" online to hear the "Whiner Line"...which I think on some days is the funniest 15 minutes in radio.

But seeing as we'll have about 14 choices for sports radio in Boston, if ya don't like one station...change the dial. You're bound to land on something. LOL

I listen to both, the Diehards are good, but are hampered by a weak signal and lead-in show is awful.because I am Pats fan more than Sox fan.it is hard to listen to the Diehards in the fall.
Big O is very good, once and a while they yell alot but it does not bother me.
I liked the Diehards(whatever they called the morning show) better in the morning because D&C are awful,it is too bad management gave up on that show.
I think your point about the Diehards being the more hardcore sports show is on the mark.

WEEI-FM sounds great the Zone doesn't. I don't have anything against the Diehards and I go up there every once in awhile if there is non-Bosox talk going on at EEI. It would be interesting to see if Ordway and Co. could sustain ratings dominence if another FM station aquired the Sox. EEI would be put in the position of having to promote another station's product.

If The Diehards got more promotion and added a bit of attitude to their schtick (and got rid of Pepe as well), they could be a very successful midday show.

I listen to both in the afternoon... the Big Show can be entertaining but it can also devolve into being more about the hosts' peculiarities than sports... and the Diehards cover a wider range of sports and look beyond Rt. 128 for topics.

agree about the Whiner Line. It makes me laugh out loud... I've even been known to contribute to it from time to time but not as much lately.

Ryen Russillo is a rising star... he does have a bit of arrogance but he knows his stuff...
