AGM'S NEW ABQ STATION/TRANSLATOR LAUNCH - 840am/102.9fm

radioINSIGHT is reporting...

American General Media is preparing to launch a new station/translator combo in Albuquerque.

840 KARS Belen, NM has completed its move from 860 and relocation to a new tower site. The station will now operate with 1.8kW days and 30 watts night. The station had been programming America’s Radio News Network programming until it went dark in March to prepare for the move.

102.9 K275AO, which had been rebroadcasting American General Media’s Classical 95.5 KHFM, has concurrently completed its upgrade from 10 to 99 watts.

The pair are currently testing simulcasting sister CHR “Z106.3” KDLW but will debut its own format on Tuesday, July 16 at 12pm. At that time it appears the station will be branded as “Area 102.9“.

Area1029.com was registered by American General Media back in February. Based on the six accounts the station’s Twitter account is following, we’d expect some form of Alternative or 90′s Rock based format.

The account is currently following the accounts for Alanis Morrissette, Green Day, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam along with two NASCAR related accounts.

I hear it running a loop that KHFM is moving off the translator and to tune to 95.5 or their internet stream to continue listening. Looking forward to the new format if it is Alternative Rock. KARS hasn't really served Belen in a while. I wonder if any one down there will miss it. I used to enjoy the Tradio in the mornings. Fun small town radio. The Heart Of New Mexico has moved to where about 900,000 more people can hear it as a parent to the translator. Can't blame AGM. I would do the same if I were owned it.

Yep. KLBU, however, has no signal at all in Albuquerque. Never really has. It really needs that on channel booster in Santa Fe. The other C3 from Pecos, now KVSF-FM 101.5, used to start coming in between Rio Rancho and Bernalillo, almost as soon as 101.7 dropped out. However, it's tower is a lot closer to Albuquerque and Santa Fe than 102.9's is, though it does have similar problems in Santa Fe proper.

Should be interesting to hear how loyal KHFM listeners react to loosing the coverage of the 102.9 translator from the Crest, especially up in the NE heights area where 95.5 is weak.
