Agriculture broadcaster Roland Brooks dead at 78

Roland D. Brooks, Jr. was the long-time statewide radio voice of Georgia agriculture through his broadcasts from the UGA Cooperative Extension Service.

I don't remember Roland. I always heard Everett Griner on stations in south Georgia.

When I was doing radio, Everett was on the old Georgia Radio News Service, or GRINS, as they called it. IIRC, Roland came in on the GN feed. Everett Griner always made me think of a character actor in old western serials.

Roland was employed by the UGA Extension Service. He was on WSB's "Dixie Farm and Home Hour," and stations throughout the state for many years. He booming voice and distinctive sign off are unforgettable.
"Rolllland Brooks, Georgia Extension Service Radio!" Joe Courson, who did Extension Service Television for years, has retired. John Harrell who produced Extension Service Radio spots after Roland Brooks retired, died a couple of years ago. Everett Griner, who has been broadcasting from Moultrie since radio was invented, is still at it on the Southeast Ag Net. He may be the last one standing outside of the programs produced by the Georgia Farm Bureau.

Sorry to hear of Rolands passing. He was always a great help to me when I did ag programs through the years at a couple of radio stations and on "The Monitor" on TV. Always a great friend. He will be missed.

Ok then. The stations I worked for were affiliated with GRNS. At the time, I don't recall any Georgia Network stations in south Georgia. Everett always sounded like he had a frog in his throat. I'm sure I heard Roland over the years, I just can't place him. Does anyone broadcast ag news anymore?

jfrancispastirchak, Roland retired in 1990. RFD didn't sign on until 2000.

Thanks for the clarification. The mystery now is why his photo looks so familiar to me. I haven't visited Georgia, or anywhere in the Southeast, since 1960.

There are a couple of programs around, I guess. Farm Bureau has one, I believe, on television. I think the farmers are getting their news via computer for the most part - there's probably an app for that just like everything else. The RFD satellite channel does farm weather and market programs too. Radio? I haven't heard any in years.

Georgia Farm Bureau does indeed do television... and radio too. As mentioned by Mr. Malone (who produced and hosted the Monitor for many years), The Georgia Farm Monitor TV show has been on the air every single week without any repeats since June 1966 with a half-hour program dedicated to Georgia and national agriculture. It's on about a dozen stations around the state, as well as nationwide on RFD-TV.

The Georgia Farm Radio Network is even older, and has a network of more than 50 stations around Georgia. There are seven programs produced every day, including ag news, market prices and information, cotton and peanut news, and more. More info: http://www.gfrn.net/affils.htm

I remember hearing Everett Griner on the old WLOR AM 730 in Thomasville (now WSTT Gospel)
back in its country days. They ran a news block around noon that included ag reports.
