Ahhh...memories of 102.7 KTFM

KTFM was my first real FM DX from Midland, TX. I discovered it when I was searching for a new FM station that was supposed to come on the air in San Angelo. But when I tuned 102.7 and heard Donovon's "Season of the Witch", I realized that no station in West Texas would be playing anything close to that sophisticated. Anxiously awaiting an announcement of the ID - I was floored with the results when it came. I had never even considered 300 mile FM reception to be a possibility. Within days I had logged multiple 300 mile targets, and was an avid KTFM listener. Realizing the reality of what a good antenna and tuner could do - I upgraded both and had a first rate setup within weeks. Without a rotor, I had to reluctantly choose a direction - and Dallas gave slightly better signals in Midland than San Antonio, and had more stations I liked. But I never forgot how KTFM introduced me to reliable 300 mile FM reception, which has served me well to get programming options over the years.

I liked KTFM in the late 80s-early 90s era. Then they kept playing all that "booty music" and I got sick of it. When The Beat arrived in 2000, KTFM was over by then. However, it's kinda cool to see the call letters back as a CHR again, even if it's on a different signal and not being a big fan of top 40 myself.

My favorite years of KTFM was 1987-1992. By 1993, they so much tried to imitate KSJL, and KQXT as KTFM 103 and started to listening to 96.1 more, and 90.1's House Nation, and started DX'ing KISS 98.5 out of Port Arthur along with 104 KRBE (on Saturday Nights) starting in 1996. When KRIO 104.1 (now KSAH) came on in 2000 the days of DXing KRBE were gone.

DMAQ and Crusin Classics were great on KTFM.
I started to grow out of Top 40 back in 2003 or 2004. I liked the old KROCK too. But Bob came along out of Austin and started listening to Bob more.

I'm partial to the mid '70s era. Bill Dante and Joe Fiorillo came in and took it live. It puttered along under Tony Raven, then Trigger Black took over and took them to the top as an AOR/Hits station. It fell apart when Tony Dale led them to a disco format in the late '70s, but then Bill Thorman and his crew made it THE dominant station in the early '80s. Hector Reyes, Catfish Jim Prewitt, Sonny Rios et al were STARS!
(I'm guessing that 'season of the witch' dx was under the Fiorillo format)
