OK - I'm probably waaay out of my league here, but here goes....
Robert Lewis in the PD for MOViN and he seems to be the only jock on the air now and only on for drive-time and selected remotes. I have no beef with Bob, but I have a feeling that him bringing his freinds over from his station in TX might have hurt the station rather than help it. Of course I can't know for sure that he is bringing his old talent over, except for this myspace page (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=55197836) They need a change and pretty fast. People I talk to are already complaining about the 'canned' sound and lack of personality (not DJs, but station personality). But, just like they say at MOViN offices, it all will come in time.
But isn't that the enemy of this business? I might be wrong, but if you already are getting the reputation as being 'canned' and 'boring' isn't it harder to change the way listeners and advertisers see you then to start from new with no reputation? You would think that if you open a new station (or flip formats) that you would've already had everything in place. Opening a station with no DJs is almost like opening a bar with all vending machines. All except for the 'I forgot about this song' effect, there is nothing on 97.5 that I can't get from my iPod)
I digress, back to MOViN music. I stopped listening to the station full-time when I heard Ice Ice Baby 2 times in the same day during my traveling around the Valley. Although I did find it weird that they play the no-rap version of Motown Philly, but play 2 Live Crew's 'Me So Horny.' I'm not even close to being a PD, but that sounds weird to me. I have heard complaints that there is too much Prince, Michael Jackson, and Madonna. I know they are going for the mini-van/SUV driving soccermom, so that music might be right on track. For me, it says the station is being too safe and afraid to take a chance and step (ready....) out-of-the-box (I hate that cliche too, but it fits).
I know a couple advertisers that have pulled their ads from the station because they say that the station doesn't offer enough for listeners or advertisers to justify the high prices. They keep being told that MOViN is getting jocks 'soon' but with no results.
I do believe that the movin' format will work. I don't know if they will be as successful as (what they percieve to be) their competitors (KISS). For this, they need to get some strong personalities and a strong morning show, of which they have neither right now. I think there was good hype in the beginning, but I'm afraid that they are losing it slowly.
Is the signal an issue? I don't think so. It's not what is holding them back at this moment. They now need to unplug the iPod and put some personality into the station. Get people excited about listening because if you listen too long, the 'I forgot about that song' energy will go away.
So let's just hope the MOViN trucks from Texas get here quick because I'm anxious to see what the wait was all about.
