It's an excellent move for both WVPO and WPLY.
When AAR began (and it is now under new management), I posted here that there should be an affiliate in the Poconos.
Far be it from me, but WVPO, at just 250 watts has a tremendous signal and can be heard 30 miles away......in all directions. WPLY doesn't have a great signal at all but does serve Mt. Pocono 24/7.
Last I looked, the makeup of that part of the county continues to be made up of NYC move-in's, and most of these people generally have a Democratic, rather than a Republican leaning politically.
So while one poster is basically correct in saying that it is a "conservative" area (he didn't say that but that is how I took what he was saying), he is talking about native Northeast Pennsylvanians, but of those natives, nearly half of them are not conservative.
Like most AM stations, specifically in this area, WVPO and WPLY have struggled to find a musical format that sells. There is only one talk station in the general area I can think of and WILK (and it's two sisters) are conservative based.
"If" parking AAR on these two stations is a stall indicating a possible sale, it's not a bad choice overall.
And like any format, no one can be sure how successful it may be.
For lack of a better format, at least they have chosen something that is not being done in the Poconos, plus there really is a potential audience for it here.
I think it was a wonderful choice, and I for one will listen to it.
And I can: like I said, WVPO has a great daytime signal and I live two counties away in NEPA and can hear it well here.
