Air America Discusses Sale

Air America Discusses Sale

Ken Tucker, Radio & Records

NOVEMBER 01, 2006 -

Air America Radio is talking to several parties about a possible sale and is hopeful of reaching a deal before Thanksgiving, according to an Associated Press report.

A lawyer for the liberal talk radio network told a U.S. bankruptcy court on Tuesday that the privately-held company was in discussions with seven different parties about a sale and was "very hopeful" of reaching a deal by Nov. 22, saying there was a "significant amount of interest."

The liberal network filed for bankruptcy protection on Oct. 13.

What is Air America Radio worth?

1. They don't own any stations.

2. Even though they have several talk shows under contract. Are they worth anything

High value hosts

Randi Rhodes
Al Franken (maybe)

Medium value hosts
Rachel Maddow
Sam Seder

Low or no value hosts
Mark Reilly
The Young Turks
Betsy Rosenberg
David Bender
Laura Flanders
etc.

Taxi Squad
Thom Hartmann
Jerry Springer

Two of the top three liberal radio hosts --Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller are not even affiliated with AAR

4. The biggest asset is their affiliate base. They no doubt have contracts for their air talent, but do you really think that Clear Channel gave them term guarantees?

5. The bankruptcy factor. Why would anyone want to deal with this mess -- $20 million of unpaid bills

6. The Rob Glaser factor. He owns 37% of venture and wants to recoup his investment

7. They don't even do their own ad sales. Jones Radio handles this

8. They have virtually no hard assets. They rent their studio facilities and probably lease most of their equipment.

What do you think the whole venture is worth?

That would be sweet. Sirius Left 146 is severely lacking on good programming. If Air America comes on Sirius, I would be very happy.

There's about as much chance of this happening as seeing Rush Limbaugh moving to XM. Why would liberal talk radio and their politically motivated producers and syndicators want to move from a network which potentially reaches 60% of radio listeners to a network that potentially reaches 2% of radio listeners?

AAR is currently aired on XM, so it wouldn't be that much of a switch....Why not simulcast on the superior Sirius?
