Air America is done

What will this do to KPTK now? Man first the liberals lose Kennedy's seat and now this!

I know I'm probably smoking something that only Air America listeners would likely legalize in Washington .... but I think this represents an enormous opportunity for the station to re-launch, rebrand, etc.

Unfortunately, CBS has shown they (a) have no real interest in investing in that property; (b) Are doing everything they can to eliminate costs on the stations for which they DO have some "favoritism".

Our region has a group that gets together and talks about issues -- it's the people who are like-minded. I find it much more boring than if we were to have reprsentation from MANY different political perspectives and engage each other politely. I point that out because it's what I dislike about talk radio that has political bent of only one flavor: You never really learn anything. In fact, I think we get into more trouble isolating ourselves with points of view that are CLOSEST to ours' and therefore never question whether something we believe is the best decision.

Yes, I realize that actually intelligence on the air is more for the NPR crowd, etc. -- and is generally not that profitable -- it seems like a great time for a station like 1090 to build a new image and actually engage people in real discussion. An audience of people who scream "ditto" is hardly that interesting, but sure (I would guess) makes you feel good about that particular point of view if you happen to have it. (But since 1090 hasn't even really had ANY local shows to speak of, I am sure this is a .... "pipe" dream).

How much programming will 1090 lose due to this? And they ceased operations this afternoon.

Do you think if they just had dead air, would anyone complain?

You know, this station would be prime for my great idea: traffic news ALL THE TIME, 24/7! Never miss a traffic report again because...that's all we do!!

It's my idea, I copywrited it!

Vancouver BC has a station like that. I don't remember the frequency. It would be great to have traffic, ferry, border times, airport info, etc. all the time. Great idea!!!

WCNX/1150-Middletown, Ct. tried that for awhile in the '90s. It's now WMRD.

Oh, you mean CHMJ 730 AM.....All traffic does have potential. I've suggested something called "Northwest Commuter Radio", bringing back the classic KCMU calls with it.

But right now, my heart has sunk over the collapse of Air America. I really hope KPTK can find a way to continue the progressive talk format independently, but I don't see that happening......

Indeed! The main problem with an all traffic channel is finding advertisers to buy spots. TSL would be non existent, since one has to listen for 15 minutes to count. Listeners would stick around just long enough to hear traffic and poof..gone.

Two other strikes against something is it would be on an AM station and the older generation that listens to AM are commuting less and less. I'd give an AM with traffic and local news non-stop about two years tops.

The bigger issue here is not what will happen to 1090, but rather what the H happened to Air America. They launched with such hope, not to mention state of the art studios and a pool of well known names.

However comedians don't necessarily make, ok almost always don't make, talk show hosts. It was a presumptuos venture that was completely void of respect for the art of radio. The hosts were acerbic and not at all entertaining and in no way prepared for radio. Comedians don't translate on radio just because they happen to be funny on stage or tv, but when you add B list comedians that appear to have a huge chip on their shoulders (Franken, Garrofolo) it's no wonder it did not last. The established hosts who did have radio experience could not save it from itself and the airwaves cried for a great programmer to come save the day but I never heard a difference. It only got worse.

AA and the long gone Greenstone media attempt by Jane Fonda, Gloria Steinmen and Rosie O'Donnell will go down in history as ill attempts to imitate the success of talk radio and the hosts who do it right. No matter your politics, great radio is always going to be great radio!

According to the station, the only show impacted that airs on AM1090 is The Ron Reagan Show. The station will look to fill his time slot. All other programming not Air America. Thankfully we will still have AM 1090 here in the Seattle area.

Actually it's possible the RR show may even stay alive. He's an employee of AA...well, was. But I heard thru a non radio grapevine (OK, the liburrul unnerground that the neocons are always yammerin about) that RR is being shopped around for syndication, still produced out of Seattle. So we will see.

Rush is going to love this tomorrow. He's probably getting jacked on greenies and Cialis even as we speak. Dog help us all.

Most corporate suits know copywriting has to to do with news while copyRIGHTING has to do with ideas.

Guess that means KOMO is six years past its expiration date.

All Traffic

"All Traffic" is a format I almost launched in early 1990's when KLSY-AM was on the block. Without the multi-ownership rules, the price was crashing down as Sandusky was about to close on KIXI and wanted to unload the "other" AM at bargain price. I drove the I-5/I-405 loop to see if the signal would reach the whole thing.

Game plan would have been to buddy up to Metro (not owned by the majors in those days) and automate status updates for each major traffic segment as those status changed. So, ideally, in about a 3-minute "loop" you could always tune in and hear about the section you wanted to know about. Backed up by about 2 15-second spots ... and you create about a 3-minute listening loop before someone bails to their "regular" station. Intent was to give a service someone would sample as they are about to make an on-ramp choice, etc.

As 'guru points out it would never qualify for traditional measurement ... but would be one of those "common sense" buys, and ideally the sales clients would have been related to things like auto maintenance, takeout-food for dinner, etc -- all choices RELEVANT to what someone might be thinking about in the car.

Ideally wanted to get calls out of Kirkland and put it on the air as "KARR-154".

At the time "Country Gold" went on and grabbed the frequency instead. I know I was looking at around $75K to acquire the stationn ... not sure what she paid for it. I was too late to the party with that idea.
