AIR AMERICA MISSED A GREAT OPPORTUNITY - STACY TAYLOR

jaymarvin said:
Why no Stacy Taylor on AAR? Why put on a radio pro like Taylor when you can have failures on like Tom Hartman, and others who think radio is about getting Dems elected instead of doing good radio. Same old story line as always.

Why do you assume that Taylor would want to work for Air America? In any case, I'd much rather listen to Hartmann, who regularly urges his listeners to become active in their local Democratic, Green or Republican parties -- and that sure doesn't sound like he's all about "getting Dems elected."

And I have nothing against Jewish oriented shows. But the target demographic is not primarily Jewish. AAR needs shows that appeal to average working Americans, otherwise they are losing stations to ESPN.

Indeed, another station with Progressive programming is flipping to ESPN on Feb 1st.

[OPUS BROADCASTING] KEZX-AM 730 Medford/Ashland
will soon cancel *ALL* progressive and
conservative shows and go to 24/7 sports. Liberals in the
very liberal college and tourist town of Ashland
are not happy with this move! Medford is more
conservative / blue-collar.
Progressive hosts that will lose their clearances
include Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, and Stephanie
Miller. PD Roger Heaton has left the station.
Previous Oregon liberal station cancellations have
included Eugene/Springfield and
Albany/Corvallis.

Premeire RN Press Release:

KEZX was not a 'progressive talk' station. They also carried Neal Boortz, Dennis Miller, Tammy Bruce, Steve and DC and Sporting News Radio. Their tag line was "Conservative and Liberal! We Talk, You Decide - That's Smart Radio!."

http://www.talkradio730.com/

The station in Eugene was sold. Still gets decent ratings and support for a 1,000 watt AM at the end of the dial, but they killed themselves by carrying a very large and expensive local on-air staff. If it were run on the cheap from day one, they wouldn't have sweat about it. I do give them credit for having such a local presence, but it was a pretty heavy burden for Churchill Media in such a small market.

And the Corvallis station never stood a chance. Only lasted a few months until CC switched to country, without any fanfare (I didn't even bother to mention it on my blog, seeing the station as insignificant). Plus, they're in earshot of KPOJ.

People read too much into this stuff sometimes.

In defense of AM 1600 Eugene (I knew their asst. PD), the cancellations were due to financial reasons, not killing themselves by hiring too many local people from the start. There are plenty of examples of small market stations with a large number of local hosts and newscasters. 1600 had a great news staff and local hosts, and a good signal. See these articles.

In defense of AM 730 Medford/Ashland (I knew their PD), they decided to try a combo of BOTH conservative and liberal, that was the intention of the station.

Just learned
about this sad news today from an employee of KOPT.
Two article links discussing that the cancellations
were due to FINANCIAL reasons:

NewsVet, no Hartman is about agenda radio like the rest of AAR and it makes for bad radio. I love it when he gets on and says he's going to debate all these authors no one knows about. That's a big time rookie mistake. How about talking about the subject matter, which might draw people into listen, instead of naming people know one has ever heard about or could care less about. I could go on and on. Oh, let me leave you with one last one. This one cracks me up too. How about when the Rachel or some of the other hosts take calls and say things like "let's go to line six." Do you think the public who maybe out there with the station on knows what going to line six means?

Sorry Jay, but I'd much rather listen to Hartmann (who's been in radio for many years and therefore is not a "rookie") than to Jay Marvin. And at least he doesn't say he "could care less," which makes no sense. I think you mean you couldn't care less.

...hate to say this, but it sounds like Jay's still ticked off that he didn't get the call from AAR to replace Franken and Thom Hartmann did. Just like Bill Press discounting AAR during one of his MSNBC programs simply because they gave Marc Maron the morning drive program and didn't bother pursuing him for it...

...he wasn't. Last time I checked, he has never admitted on-air that he cut the corners of his conscience just to get a major-market radio job...Hartmann *is* on more stations than you are, however...

You're right... I'm on none. However, I can tell you that as a 20-something working in radio and earning a (growing) multi-six figure income, life here really sucks.

I'll let Jay defend himself but I think many would disagree.

ED SCHULTZ SHOULD have been hired by Air America for 9A-NOON PT.

Or, Air America should have made a deal w/ Jones, Krane, and Michaels for Schultz to be live on ALL Air America stations (replacing Franken).

Now we have a disaster, with Schultz and Hartmann "competing" for live clearances. Some stations don't take one or the other, and others tape delay Schultz or Hartmann late at night.

It really makes for bad radio when your one of your midday hosts has been taped ... from just 3 hours earlier. I don't see this problem on conservative stations who are all live ... where Rush = Hannity = Levin or Savage = Alan Colmes = C2C.

AAR should have gotten him, but no one ever thought they would or that he'd accept.

A lot of stations still run Schultz in his old time slot, especially in the western U.S.

As to your conservative talk lineups... really, how many stations are carrying Alan Colmes? ;)

The one here in Indianapolis where I work carries Colmes. Along with Beck, O'Riley, Miller, Boortz and Medved.

You are correct, Mr. Horner; WXNT does carry Colmes. Now that 93.9 is gone, I guess 1430 is back to playing second fiddle, but it got kind of bad there for awhile, sorry to say.
