Air America now in Lafayette

Lafayette has become the third Louisiana city to have an Air America affiliate. Cajun Communications flipped 1490/KEUN from simulcasting 105.5/KEUN's ABC Real Country format this morning, with Morning Sedition as the first program aired.

From what I've heard, the signal covers Lafayette fairly well, with the exception of a couple of spots where another, yet-to-be-identified station comes through at 1480, causing some interference.

That other station, would it be another 1490 instead? As KEUN-AM (Eunice) and KJIN-AM (Houma) clash on 1490 around New Iberia.

KJIN-Am is a Guaranty owned sports station

KJIN pattern: http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KJIN&service=AM&status=L&hours=U

KEUN pattern:

But all this may be temporary however on KEUN's part.......

I had to laugh when I saw it was KEUN. You are right about
it being temporary. KEUN is about to be moved to Alexandria,
(Pineville to be exact). The CP has been in the works for a
long time and they just filed for an amendment to the CP
a few days ago. They have the site and are ready to go.

The reason for the Air America flip now was to head off
any other station from grabbing it in Alexandria. The
Lafayette market is still wide open according to the Air
America people and they are still looking for an affiliate
in Lafayette. KEUN is getting no protection from Air America
for Lafayette.

Re: Air America in Lafayette for now!

What signal will KEUN be on in alexandria?....and is anyone thinking Monroe or Shreveport yet.....? I would love to see an AAR station in every key city in Louisiana

New Orleans - check
BR - check
Shreveport - not yet
Lafayette - for now.
Lake Charles - nope
Monroe - still hoping
Alexandria - check
Natchitoches - im dreaming...LOL

Still at 1490
Just changing City of License to Pineville from Eunice
and relocating the tower to Pineville.

I havent checked so I have to ask...what other stations are in Eunice? if this is the only AM (and I know there IS an FM but still.....), to me, they would have to pull a miracle to move it! I havent seen the Commission allow the only AM service for a COL move out anytime recently.

1490/KEUN is the only AM station licensed to Eunice. They also have co-owned 105.5/KEUN(-FM.)

I've checked on the FCC site, and the applications have been submitted and tenered for filing, but no actions have been taken yet (much less a construction permit issued.)

Still a 1kw signal so figure the same coverage area they enjoy now but instead , the tower will be located in Pineville.

On other towns for air america:

Lafayette is growing and already had a couple of talk stations there (if you count sports)..After BR and New orleans, I figured one of the amers would have flipped in lafayette proper or someone would have made an offer on one of the other rimshots into town to do it. My idea would be KPEL am or KVOL am

I figured North Louisiana for more conservative and don't know personally how a left lean would work up there.

In Shreveport, I would hope Clear Channel would keep it's lesson it learned and not flip KWKH (which is their Classic Country/sports station) as one it's one of my favorites (ok got me there) but I don't know how much actual promotion is done of KWKH up there but figure if more was done, we would see better numbers.
Cumulus' KRMD may be a logical choice or one of the Cp applications currently being sought in shreveport ....

In Monroe and Lake Chuck I don't know if they have the market for it yet.(remember Lafayette is 101, and Shreveport is 132)

Oh and Natchitoches, almost forgot.... I would have said KRRP but apparently they are running a sports format http://www.krrpradio.com/ ...( was up for sale last year) only others would be if you can get one of the other owners to sell their station..... Or wait for some of the planned stations talked about in Shreveport.....

Re: Air America in Lafayette for now!

This was part of AM Auction 84. KEUN was a singleton
in the auction and is therefore allowed to file. They've
made a few amendments otherwise this would have been done
long ago. Moving an AM (even if it's the only one in a COL)
has become pretty common. The FCC looks at the number of
people that will be served. The case here is that Pineville
has no service. We all know it does but under the FCC it does
not so this is allowed. There are a bunch of these that are
about to happen in Louisiana. The KEUN move is a rubber stamp
at this point. That was the point of the auction.

If the new rules get put into place, expect a flurry of these
to start especially on the AM band.

Re: Air America in Lafayette for now!

The other thing to consider :When that motion was filed, KLAA and KHFX (with studios in Pineville) were owned by KEUN's ownership, too.

That's not the case, anymore. Was there a correlation then, and is there a change in game plan now?

I'd heard that the powers-that-be really wanted to move in to the Lafayette market if they could, and possibly turn around and sell for a nice, tidy profit.

Just more speculation...
