Air America pulls the plug.

In a statement released to staffers today AAR head Charlie Kireker said, “It is with the greatest regret, on behalf of our Board, that we must announce that Air America Media is ceasing its live programming operations as of this afternoon, and that the Company will file soon under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code to carry out an orderly winding-down of the business.”

I guess this puts WWRL in limbo.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

The left goes silent just as the supreme ct. approves unlimited corporate political advertising. What could possibly go wrong with that?

Now that Air America is gone forever after over 5 years, first at WLIB back in 2004, and then moved to WWRL in 2007 until the very end. Very disappointed to see them go, in the words of Porky Pig "Th-th-th-that's All Folks!"

What's going to happen at WWRL? Are they going to speculate that the station is bringing back "100% Pure Soul". Yep! This is where WWRL is bringing the station back, R&B/soul oldies from the 60's and 70's, just like the one they did back in 1997 or 1998 along with the "Midday Magic" show. Let's hope WWRL will bring the classic urban stuff back to New York airwaves with nothing but "100% Pure Soul" with including the artists like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, the Temptations, the Four Tops, Diana Ross, the Supremes, the O'Jays, the Delfonics, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, the Stylistics, Blue Magic, the Main Ingredient, and the rest are going to be hearing on its return to the airwaves to hear nothing but classic soul on WWRL, no more of this hip-hop garbage, just 60's and 70's soul on the new WWRL. This is what suppose to happen in a matter of months and weeks after Air America pulled the plug.

well I can certainly live with that;
as long as they play plenty of Marvelettes,Vandellas, and the post-Ross, 70s Supremes, crackling on the AM dial,jes the way I like it...

Just wanted to add that while the website is down, WWRL 1600 is still airing shows today, apparently today is their "Goobye Day", so they are still on the air. Rachel Maddow started her show with "This is Friday January 22nd 2010" told some of her history with Air America and announced its end. I wonder how it will go this weekend? (Or if today is indeed the last day?)

6PM Friday was the time of death, but Air America is feeding best-of programming to the stations til 9PM Monday.

They could put a dance music format on the dial.

Well, we all saw what happened with their recent attempts on a TV audio frequency, so when all else fails, why not grab a spot on the AM dial? ;)

WWRL will have no difficulty renting the available time slots to another operator who comes waving a stack of Benjamins around.

Trust me on this.

They could easily fill the vacated time slots with syndicated fare from other networks, such as KTLK-AM-1150 Los Angeles (a now-former Air America affiliate) has done. As it was, Air America programming wasn't filling up every time slot on either station to begin with.
