Air America taps Ron Kuby as permanent afternoon host

I read somewhere - I think it was All Access that Randi went to Dallas.

That should be fun. :D

Good move on AAR's part. Kuby is a real pro. They need more people like him and Lionel. Radio should be done by radio people.

Unfortunately, Kuby has pretty much no chance against Nova M's Randi Rhodes. Only 3 stations are even bothering to carry Air America's 3 PM-6 PM show (WXXM 92.1 in Madison, WVKO in Columbus, and WWRL in New York). Even their XM affiliate switched to Randi a few weeks ago.

The only Air America hosts that have a decent amount of clearances now are Rachel Maddow and Thom Hartmann.

Thom Hartmann did pretty well when he was on at the same time as Al Franken. Many stations played one or the other on delay. And Stephanie Miller had very few affiliates for quite a while after she started her current show. If Kuby can get decent ratings on the few stations that will carry him initially, more will get on board.

Newsvet failed to mention the current situation of Hartmann and Ed Schultz both occupying the Noon to 3 PM (ET) slot and both getting lots of clearances (with stations often delaying one or the other). And Schultz and Rhodes both occupied the 3 PM to 6 PM slot for a long time and also got a lot of clearances, mostly on the same stations.

Huh? What does that mean?

I think this was what was being referred to - Dallas is going to get a new progressive station next month:

And by the way, Newsvet - and I wasn't sure if your comment above was regarding shows on Air America that get off to slow starts (since you cited Hartmann and Kuby in the same breath), or progressive shows in general... but just to clarify... Stephanie is not, has not, and most likely never will be Air America personnel.

I don't see why any clarification was necessary. Of course Stephanie Miller isn't on Air America....but even if she was, the point would remain the same. New shows often take a while to pick up steam (and affiliates). Kuby could become as successful as Miller or even more so. Or not.

betting on the "not" here, only for the simple fact that while ron kuby may be a radio person, the idiots (and that would be putting it nicely) who run air america aren't. the way that they handled the rhodes situation was as much of a pr disaster for them as it was a pr boon for randi. i really can't think of too many networks or station clearances that were set up in the short amount of time it took from the announcement of her going to nova m to her actual first day.

i think that air america needs to shut it down because they are an embarassment to the real liberal talk format with their constant juggling and talent (signings and releases) decisions they make.

Kuby knows radio...he knows that it's about entertainment. That puts him head and shoulders above ninety percent of the liberal hosts - and for that matter, most of the conservative ones... ;D

Kuby may have a shot at success because, as pointed out, he knows the radio talk business is entertainment first.

Talk radio is the old personality Top 40 format without the same twenty songs played every two hours. The hosts who made the move from Top 40 to talk, such as Imus and Rush, recognized that fact at the beginning. The liberal hosts need to pick up on it.

One has to wonder how long Hannity will last without some anger management rehab.

Kuby does have a shot at making a dent in the talk radio market... Hannity is up on his contract.. the question is... Will CC/ABC continue or will Citidel take over and give him 5 more years?

Really good question.

First time I heard him was today. My newscasts locally should complement him quite nicely. :)

I hope the GM is breathing a little easier tonight. 8)

never heard of the guy but what happened to rhodes? why was she terminated? she's great talent, so I guess that network just like to dump people as frequently as they can like malloy and mark riley / mark maron. what a way to build ratings when you play musical chairs with hosts. will hartmann be next? I hope not!

what you say OFF the air shouldn't have any bearing on your employment in radio

what randi said was not appropriate but making mistakes is part of the territory of talk hosts who have dynamic personalities

any good radio manager understands this - apparently air america mgmt does not

this is sad for randi because she may or may not be able to get as many affiliates with her new network as with air america

...only two stations that carried Randi on AAR did not make the move with her to Nova M. All the rest did...
