Air America to File Bankruptcy

http://stoptheaclu.com/archives/2006/09/13/air-america-to-file-for-bankruptcy/

Think Progress is reporting that Air America radio will announce filing for bankruptcy protection on Friday according to three independent sources. The company has experienced financial difficulties throughout its tenure, continuing to request infusions of capital and suffering the loss of several high-profile hosts. Five employees were laid off Tuesday without severance.

The radio has had several controversies in its brief tenure including a funding scandal involving Evan Cohen. Air America Radio was funneled $875,000 dollars from Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club, a not-for-profit, in the form of a “loan” to fund its operations. Due to of the less-than-ethical funding arrangement, Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club has been disbanded.

In another incident, The Randi Rhodes Show aired a skit that could have been interpreted as advocating the execution of the President George W. Bush. Several of the shows have been accused as fostering bigotry against Christians, Catholics in particular, and have been seen as lowering the dignity of political debate.

Suit,

Yep, I heard Sean Hannity gloating this afternoon on KVI.

We need a counterpoise to Rush, Fox and the rest, but Air America wasn't it. It was shrill, angry and with few exceptions without any real entertainment value. If they didn't spend so much time bashing Bush they might have had a product.

I hope someone else with some radio sense (not Hollywood wannabes and TV comedians) will give it a go.

We HAD a counter to Rush Limbaugh, et al....All through the 80's as talk radio grew out of "companion radio" and into "advice radio" and into "issue radio," most -- not all -- syndicated and local hosts were liberal. It wasn't until Limbaugh took off that there was a very large, yet quiet, market for conservative viewpoints and then it exploded.

I hope they keep some momentum or that some of the programming can continue somehow. Franken had some great bits that I thought made fun radio ... imaginary floats in the inauguration parade; or night of the state of the union address when the administration was were wheeling in a nuclear bomb because research showed that odds of having two bombs in one location were completely miniscule so they figured if they put one bomb in there already it would be the best defense.

To me that is a nice change of pace from all that "get 'em riled up and hating people" stuff that is the fave weapon of many of the talk shows out there. Really nice when a host makes a point with humor and a little subtlety. I think the best JOKES are always the ones where someone has to think and then ...."oh yeah...I get it now" and this kind of entertainment works the same way. Basically what made Phil Hendrie so creative.

Elections are great times for the talking heads like Rush and Sean Vanity. I can see them getting a bump up the closer we get to November (that's when the elections are, dialtwisty).

Any spike for AA would depend more on the results of the election. Air America is a lot like the democratic party, not really going in any direction other than 'bash Bush' (as LBB pointed out). It's going to take political momentum for AA to build, or simply survive. But Air America is not going to take over surpass the right wing shows.

I love how the shrill, loudmouth people on the right LOVE to say that Air America is shrill and Bush-bashing. :D :D :D

Good grief! Rush, Sean, Bill, and all the cast of characters hurl insults at democrats ALL freakin' day long!!! Why can't the LEFT have just one network to themselves without a bunch of ridiculous statement by the right-wing NUTJOBS???

;D

Ah the left. Suppose you'll never get it. But hey, I'll try to clue you in for a brief second.

Air America's problem that was nasty and hateful. It was personal against Bush often. Counter that to Rush (Hannity not so much) who is a entertainer and often says things firmly tounge in cheek. Bedrock principle is there, but there is humor in it. Its not personal. AA was humorless, personal and mostly unentertaining.

The best of Conversative talk radio is just the opposite.

Consider yourself educated.

;)

I consider myself amused.

You go on and keep thinking what you think.
