Air America to shut down

Inside Radio is reporting that Air America will shut down completely on Monday.
Let the political posturing, on both sides, begin! Conspiracy theories, anyone? :D

Maybe the producers that Air America let go can work for Santos now! :D (That seems to be the meme on the Boston R-I board now, no?)

Referring to a 2005 Boston Globe article:

>>The best part is the last line of the article. It’s a quote from Jon Sinton, Air America’s president of programming.”In five years we’ll be on 600 radio stations,” Sinton boasted. ”The brand will be pervasive, and I think it will be a quaint memory when people said, ‘Boy, what a stupid idea.’”

Air America had a crappy business plan, it had nothing to do with politics.

I will say it again: Hugh Hewitt was giggling like a schoolgirl the other day about Air America going under. Hugh failed to mention that the Salem talk stations have piss poor ratings pretty much across the country, but big sugar daddy Salem keeps him and his other buddies on the air by buying stations in big cities and picking up the tab for the whole thing, evidently regardless of performance.

Hugh's Salem station in New York, WNYM 50,000 watts on 970 (!), has a point 2 (.2) in the last book. I think AA on WLIB at least got a 1 share.

Must be nice to have sugar daddy, eh Hugh? We'll never hear about this on his show, will we.

Air America has certainly had money during its existence, especially when the Greens' came in to bail out the place.

The only real difference between Air America and Salem is that....for Salem....the money hasn't run out yet.

Nor is it likely to run out at any time. Although the company weathered some tough financial times in 2009, it is financially much better run than most medium-large radio companies in the US. Its principals are also politically very well connected and, I believe, are in a position to call in unlimited numbers of chits if it should ever come to that. The latest Supreme Court ruling pretty much guarantees Salem's access to unlimited funds. Corporate donors can claim that their contributions are in support of political campaigns.

We'll see how Sliwa does for WNYM

Salem had "Boston conservative talk" on 1150 for awhile but they decided to take it Spanish. Note though
that 1200 has better signal and Beck/Rush (someday) more high profile than Salem talkers. 1150 also had
Hannity, which 1200 will have at their start.
