Air America's worst enemy: NPR?

Interesting Ben Fong-Torres column in Sunday's Chron, about local radio ratings. Seems public and listener-supported stations like KQED and KPFA do surprisisngly well (they don't subscribe to Arbitron, so their ratings don't get reported). Sorry if this is old news; it was new to me.

If KQED is getting between 4 and 5 % of the audience, that could explain why Air America's ratings are lackluster, even in a lefty bastion like SF.

Air America's ratings are lackluster because it's an inferior product, not because it has an inferior message. Just my two cents, but it sounds like pretty bad radio to me. Anyone else have an opinion on that?

KQED does subscribe to Arbitron. The commercial books do not publish the non-commercial results, but KQED has the complete reports. KPFA does not believe in Arbitron audience surveys, but they do pay attention to subscription drive numbers.

When you have a rapper doing a talk show on politics, you know it's in trouble.

If you want to hear Air America's product done right, just listen to KGO. I’m sure you guys already know that but my point is liberal talk radio CAN be done well. KGO's ratings certainly show it.
