My, I'm full of questions today, aren't I? Anyhow, in an air chain of VST effects, where is the proper (or best-sounding) place to insert a plate reverb effect? Right now I have it next-to-last just before the limiter.
I worked for a chief engineer who put a new re-verb box on the oldies station. He didn't realize he had put if after the EAS box until we had a test go off and it echoed across the airways...
I thought the tones sounded awesome, but I don't think the FCC would have shared my enjoyment.
It may depend on the type of reverb unit.
Some reverb units will sound awful if they are momentarily overdriven (someone pegging the console). If that's the case, you're going to want limiting before it.
If you have a unit like the Orban 111B that has a limiter in it to prevent that, put it first in the chain. I like that best because it will give you more decay (depth) vs simple echo. The processing after the reverb will also enhance the reverb and decay so you have to be aware of that. What I've found works best is running a very small amount of reverb before processing, which will usually make it sound "bigger", "brighter", and fill the slight gaps of full automation that occasionally occur.
I like to not be able to hear it if one is talking over an intro of a song or over music, but be able to slightly hear it when talking over dead air (no background music).
