Air Check from the old "106.1 FM The Zephyr"

What a find!

Came across a box of old tapes and found one full of clips from The Zephyr (WZRH Picayune/New Orleans). This was recorded back in the end of 1992.

There isn't much audio online from this station, so I wanted to share it here in case anyone cared to listen. This was a special station for a lot of us in New Orleans back then.

Looks like YouTube pulled this down. Can you share it another way?

I've been looking for air checks from the Zephyr forever. Thanks for posting!

The Zephyr reminds me of a couple of stations in Southeastern Virginia.

If you're the same gentleman who co-hosts the morning show on Channel 27 in Hampton Roads, you're probably familiar with these: a long-defunct station called The Coast, which is now Triple A Bob FM and 96X, which is still around playing today's alternative music.

By the way, was that the late Chris Corley doing the imaging at the beginning of tape? He was once 96X's PD!

Did The Zephyr play any grunge? And was the house music at the end part of a weekend specialty show?

I know that I am a year late, but thanks for sharing this! I really enjoyed it!

Bob FM is Adult Hits, is it not? Loved AAA WKOC The Coast in the 90s, especially when it simulcast on 94.1 WKOD giving us a better signal on the Northern Neck in VA.

You are right JBraddock, Bob FM is Adult Hits. Sorry about that. Wow, I had almost forgotten about The Coast simulcast on 93.7 and 94.1.
That was around '91 or '92 right? That was kind of strange since the two frequencies were adjacent (if you were in an area where you could

get them both.) How long did that last? 94.1 then went back to something like Easy Listening which morphed into Soft AC since Easy Listening
was pretty much over by the early '90s. Does that sound about right?

Wikipedia says WKOD was around for about a year, 1991-92. I guess WKOC leased 94.1 when they launched on 93.7 in '91 to cover the northern part of Tidewater.

Hi there. Sorry it took so long to reply!

I do believe that was Corley at the very beginning. The Zephyr did play some grunge. Pearl Jam, Nirvana and the like were all staples near the end. Sadly, faced with competition from an ALT station with a stringer signal and a tighter playlist (106.7), the Zephyr's days were numbered.

The house music at the end was part of the "Zephyr Zone" -- a Saturday night mix show (that I loved).

And yes, I am the gentleman from Channel 27. What a small world haha.
