Air check "tapes"?

Curious would tapes still be accepted by a PD or would that be a sign of the "old guard". I realize cds are easier for them and all..but what if all you had WAS a tape of your best stuff. A conversion from ANA to CDR would still have "hiss". Just wondering..nobody would hire me with a freaking DVD-Audio aircheck anyway.

It doesn't matter if there's a little tape hiss on the CDR. It's much easier for them to play a CD these days, which could possibly make the difference between getting listened to, or not.

However, I hope the fact that your aircheck is on tape doesn't mean that it's decades old. The PD would most likely want a more recent example of your sound.

That may become obsolete eventually too. Many are accepting them e-mailed as .mp3's now.

Erica,
It's pretty easy.
You don't even really need studio equipment. All you have to do is download Audacity, plug your tape player into the Line in plug in your Copmuter and record. Then, "Save As" mp3. Once you've done that, you can easily use Windows Media Player to burn the mp3 onto a CD, or email the mp3.

If you don't have a cd burner on your computer, it's an investment I would recommend, or buy a new comptuer or notebook, CD and even DVD burners are becomming standard now.

tape is not "decades old" no.

Thanks for the help on converting too...

Audacity is good stuff.

I've even given a copy to my grandfather so he can record WJIB and remove the noise before he saves the songs as MP3s.

I hope he has an AM Stereo receiver so that he's able to get WJIB in it's full glory. It sounds almost as good as FM Stereo on my mid-80's Sony STR-AV490 wideband AM Stereo/FM Stereo receiver in the daytime here in Somerville. The nighttime stereo reception is a little noisy after the station powers down to five watts at sunset.

As one who sifts through airchecks I can say that mp3 is the best way to go - as long as they are kept short and focused. PD's are kept busy by a lot of stuff they never really wanted to do (the biz side of the biz) so ANYTHING that saves time is a bonus!

I may be unconventional, but I look at the resume first. If your history has credibility I'll take the extra time to listen whether it be tape, mp3 or vinyl ;) (had to throw that in!).

The bottom line with airchecks remains the same as it ever was...establish what you do quickly, don't waste the PD's time and you'll get due consideration (generally meaning that you'll have the opportunity to "sell" yourself via an interview, more audio, etc.).

I hope this was helpful!
