A friend and I were discussing air-checks and he told me how he puts 2 minutes of show from EVERY station that he's currently on, production cuts, imaging cuts, a full show, etc.

I thought that this was a little overkill...he's currently on four stations.

Am I out of the loop? I always thought the shorter the better.

I'm not a PD. But I have worked for a few stations in a few different markets. I would say the answer to your question, depends on what type of jock someone is looking for. If you have any advanced knowledge about what the position entails at all, you should design your air-check around what the PD is looking for. If it's morning drive or a comedy/personality oriented show, obviously a weather break and a couple of time & temp/Jock ID's probably won't cut it. If it's a phone heavy slot (mid day requests or Night slammer type of job), then you want to show those skills. If you're familiar with the station, listen to the jock you think is the best and do a couple of minutes of similar stuff. You should go to another radio website, such as Radioonline.com and listen to some of the top #50 market jocks that have airchecks on there. I'm sure there are links to such sites for posting airchecks at allaccess.com. You'll get good ideas. If you're emailing the aircheck somewhere, then definitely keep less than three minutes. Imaging can be overkill unless they're looking for an imaging producer. But a little bit can really make it sound slick. Or make a CD with the different station airchecks as separate tracks, label them as so, and that way the PD can listen if he/she wants to. But he/she doesn't have to. In my opinion, that's the best way. Make the individual tracks no longer than two minutes each. Just my opinion...For what it's worth.
 
All pd's are different. But I always listened to the first 20 seconds or so.....If it was good, I kept listening. If not, in the garbage. Typically I would get best of stuff, with the best stuff on the disc first. Now if by chance, I was interested in hiring, I would make the call and start the discussion. Usually, in that initial call, I'd very bluntly and honestly tell the potential employee how much money I could pay them and see if they were interested. I can't stand haggling about money so if they needed more than I had, I could move on and so could they. Not waste anyones time.
If they seemed interested, I would then ask them for an un scoped air check. As a pd, I would rather not get a "greatest bits" check. I want to hear what you sound like on an average day. Outside of mornings, I'm looking for specific things. The first thing I'm looking for is the basics. If your selling the station name and positioner without blowing through it to get to the stuff you think is important, is whats important to me. If a jock has mastered that, chances are they know what they are doing. Once I get past that first litmus test, I start looking for specifics. Which I won't go into because it varies from shift to shift and format to format. Bottom line, jgamble, at least for me......grab me in the first 20 seconds of your check, but also make the rest of it stand up as well. And get ready to be asked for un scoped.
