BTW, Dain has two books for sale on Amazon.com, one about trains and the other a motivational book. I'm sure he'd love it if everyone bought one.

My favorite airname was Hugh Djardon. I think it was some guy in California.

Re: Air Names (you ain't gonna believe this)

When I started as an intern in Phoenix,
I worked for Barry Chase (formerly
Chase & Woodside in ATL). Barry's real
first name was Herbert, I think. I
found out when he signed the engineering
log. I was thinking...why Barry Chase?

He told me that one of his first jobs
was in a smaller market. Guy would hire
him but only if he used Barry Chase.
He needed a job, done. Later, Barry
found out the reason was the owner got
some free jock jingles and jock shouts
from TM Century..and the name of the jock?
Yep.

For me,I was on a three name kick for a while:

Peter James Bond
Rick Allen Hunter
Dry Wall Stud

I loved a Fort Myers FLA jock: Swinging Dick Tyler.
Great pipes.

Gotta give it up to Bubba the Love Sponge for name.
Not that shithead who tried to steal his name...the
real Bubba Clem. r

I was simply, The All American Boy...Paul Troy...even though I drove a VW...

Anyway, I got to this post looking for the whereabouts of Chuckie Boo Boo Baron - we worked together in Columbus, GA in 1969/1970 at WDAK....or do you know whatever happened to Allan Boyd (PD), Chris Brennan or Larry ???? -

South 107 up in Rome,GA had a guy by the name of Bill Dollar.

Jay Braswell - I did not know that you used to work at Island 106 in PCB! You probably don't like their format now but I love it!

I heard Boo Barron a couple of years ago on WBKZ Jefferson, GA. Gospel music with Boo just shriekin.

Chucky Boo Boo Baron

I first heard that guy on, as he termed it, "BigOlFunkyDowntownNighttimeWAYS" out of Charlotte back in the 70's. Then, in the late 80's I got to work with him at Z-100. Also heard him a time or two in the 80's on G-105 out of Durham.

I never heard him there, but I know that about the most stable job he ever held was at the old WEAL in GSO. He's a real card.

Boo Boo Baron is still one of the wildest characters out there..It was said that his goal was to work for a few weeks for every TOP 40 AM..(LATER RnB/Soul AMS) in the South..

My favorite names were at the old WNIA in Buffalo..Owned by Gordon P. Brown..he didn't run spots just very few PSA's and this bizzarre prayer (The Angeles Prayer) at noon..and occasionally this long dissertation about the ancient Egyptions..ending with the phrase "Be Big..Be A Builder"

Each jock (whoever they were was named the same for any shift they worked..If you did nights..you were Mike Melody!..Afternoons...Jerry Jack...Middays..Mack McGuire..and the morning man..whoever it was got to be Tommy Thomas. A very difficult "audition" took place at the hands of one Mary Lounsbury..who had us read this extremely hard newcast and one very hard to read commercial into a Webcor tape recorder..after which she berated you telling you that disc jockey's are a "dime a dozen" and that 2.10 an hour was too much for a deejay, but she would pay it if the person was good enough (Minimum wage was a whopping 1.95/hour in 1968)

Goofy radio station that claimed pretty hefty numbers against WKBW and mcClendon's WYSL..mostly because of the lack of commercials.

No cart machines..no air conditioning..and a shabby 4 pot RCA production board was it...Whew..the good old days!

There was an earlier time, before I was named "Jay" (instead of being forced to use Jerry) by Johnny Reid at WTWA in Thomson, Georgia, when I used Bob Walker. Dave Hensley, the PD at WGUS in Augusta, insisted on calling me Skinny Bobby Walker. At that point in time, I'd never heard of Skinny Bobby Harper, so I didn't get it. That all became somewhat interesting, a few years down the road. I found myself managing WKRP in Dallas, Georgia, and, of course, we all now know that Skinny Bobby was the model for Johnny Fever.

One of these days, I gotta write that book. <P ID="signature">______________

WGUS "The Big GUS" Country FM? Wow, THAT takes me back! I'm not as seasoned as you guys, but I remember my dad playing WGUS in the car before they flipped to "Power 102", a CHR format. Then, I listened to it even up to now when, after a "Total Beatles Weekend" they flipped, yet again, to Classic Rock Eagle 102, which is what they are now. I don't know if he paid much attention to the jocks, but I've got to ask my dad if he remembers you. I was on WBBQ and WZNY in Augusta during the late 90s and used my real last name. After a few freaky phone calls, wifey and I will DEFINATELY not have that again.

Back in the heyday of WBBQ (top 40), there was "Handsome Harley Drew" who had the "Golden Oldies Hour" at noon with Paul Harvey with The Rest Of The Story after that. When I was at WBBQ (AC), we had "Dickie Shannon" doing afternoon drive. I think he was there way back from the top 40 days. I used to fill in for him before I moved to Atlanta. Harley Drew's still there, I think at "The Drive" 93.9FM.

I think Harley has been the program director and host of WGAC 580's Augusta Morning News for several years now. They also simulcast on 93.1 FM.

Yep, you're right. Here's the link: http://www.wgac.com/index.php?page=2

When I left in '99 he was PD of Cool 93.9FM. He's been with Beasley Broadcasting for a long time. I see Marsy McFerren's there, too. She was mid-days at WBBQ when I was there. I heard CC came in and cleaned Q's house when they bought it from Cumulus.

I knew a guy once who got stuck with "Charlie Rocket" simply because the station already had a jingle package using the name.

New Jersey 101.5 once went with the theme names for their traffic reporters: Sandy Hook, Tom Rivers, etc...

In fact "Tom Rivers" also reports for WINS in New York, using his real name. The Tom Rivers moniker just stuck.
