Air Names

A guy, Joe Hurley, does the traffic for WRKO in Boston, and on Entecom's sister station WAAF, he's Major Dick.

In the 70's, a guy named Dick Burch was morning man on WSYR in Syracuse. His show was "Sweet Dick in the Morning." I heard an aircheck where after stumbling over some words, he said, "You don't know how hard it is to be a Sweet Dick in the morning."

The first post reference to PD's handing out names made me shudder, as I remembered the kitschy name I narrowly avoided when I got my first FM job.

If I didn't come up with one on my own, I was going to have to use "Johnny Love".
Which is bad enough on its own ... except that I really think it wouldn't have been a great fit on a primarily Southern Gospel station.

Luckily, I decided that I actually liked my middle name (an old family name) a lot better than I ever realized & used it for over a decade.

Let's not forget Atlanta's newest night guy. Q100's "Adam Bomb".

Clever.

Not a radio air name, but I remember when working in Boston in the 90's a guy running for Senate (or maybe the house) in New Hampshire named Dick Sweat.

Funniest billboard I ever saw.

The current producer for the WGST Denny Shafer Show goes by "Crystal Lake." Not sure if that's her real name or not.

Well, you wanna go off radio for a minute, look at some Atlanta television reporters: Roy Hobbs (The Natural) and Randy Travis (Country Singer), Fox 5; Tom Jones (Vegas Baby!) WSB. Every time I see Tom Jones reporting, I always attempt to sing "It's Not Unusual To Be Loved By Anyone......." Reminds me WHY I became a jock and not a singer. ;)

I know so many radio names, mostly from Chicago, that it isn't funny. Of course everyone has heard of Larry Lujack. His real name is Larry Blackenberg! He took Lujack from Notre Dame QB legend, Johnny. The funniest one was a notorious deejay in Chicago named Charles Zimmerman. When he was at WLS-FM he went by Chuck Evans. Then he was fired for giving away free t-shirts to certain females. He went across the street to B96 and became Chuck Nasty. Talk about crazy!!! Rodney Ho's real last name is Horowitz. He isn't Asian at all, he's a MOT and we are proud to have him.

When I was first hired at WQXI FM back in 1975 Scott Shannon, my first PD, wanted to name me "Steven Weed" (in honor of Patty Hurst's original finance - when she was kidnapped by the SLA) and when I resisted that, he came up with "Roach Rogers"... which obviously was worse...LOL... so since I had already put in a number of years at WRAS, we just went with my first name for a while... ultimately I switched to The Silver Haired Man of Rock and Roll later when Don Benson was the PD. Shannon passed out names to Jeff McCartney and Kevin O'Connel among others. Jim Morrison was really Jim Morrison... and McKee used his real name too...
