Aircheck: Music Channel One (satellite network)

Note: Also posted on the airchecks board

Music Channel One was a nationally distributed satellite network that originated from CHR KMCK (Power 105.7) Siloam Springs/Fayetteville, AR. The service started in either 1992 or 1993 and continued through the 1990's. One of the affiliates of the network was WVJC Mt. Carmel, IL (89.1 MHz)--a non commercial station based at Wabash Valley Community College. WVJC is about 100 miles east of my QTH (St. Louis area). As a result, there is some fading from time to time.

While this network was nationwide, the playlist was the same as Power 105.7. Power and its predecessor (K-106) had an approach to Top-40 I enjoyed. The DJ's featured are Bazooka Joe and Richard Kidd.

This is a six hour recording split into six files (192/44.1), and was recorded in April 1997 using a VCR. I was not able to nail down the exact date, but it was recorded overnight Tuesday-Wednesday, and the weather forecasts gave some clues.

How many of you remember Music Channel One in the pre-Cumulus era of Power 105.7?

I remember Music Channel One. I arrived in Fayetteville in '94 to attend U of A and stayed off-and-on through May '97 (went to Little Rock for a semester, took summers off and did some student teaching elsewhere twice for roughly two months at a time). I really didn't listen much to Power 105.7, but I remember they initially rolled Music Channel One out as an evening only service and made a big-to-do about it each evening "Music Channel One is on-the-air!". It eventually rolled out 24 hours but never had many affiliates, and it seemed I never heard much about it after that, though it was still around.

Music Channel One, by the way, launched because ABC/SMN's "The Heat" has switched to a hot AC format, which is basically what it is today as "Today's Best Hits." I was more of a classic rock and AOR listener in college. So, as I mentioned, I rarely listened to Power 105.7, or top-40 in general as I could also get KISR and KSYN in Fayetteville.

Paul Garcia of Power 105.7 and later 104.9 The X was a friend of mine, but I lost touch with him shortly after he left Power 105.7. He never mentioned Music Channel One much, though. I remember when he got out of radio, and I think he took a job at Walmart or JB Hunt, but I don't remember. Shortly after he left Power, my grades dropped, and I went to Ft. Worth and got a real job for a few months. When I got back to Arkansas to try college again, I found I had lost his contact information.

Thanks for this! Great stuff. I, too, remember Music Channel One and listened while I was in Fayetteville for college. I remember the jocks on Power 105.7 would usually make a big deal just before 7:00 p.m. (I think?) about going national in a few minutes.

Looks like these airchecks were made the month before I started my first radio job at FM98 in Fayetteville (Demaree Media). Brings back the memories!

@KT > What a HOOT to see you on this board!! Still doing radio or are you doing web stuff? I remember you were really into web design.

@rockradio1017 - Who are you? I've been lurking here for years, just registered recently.

Never got into the technical side of web design. Left radio in 2003 and went to corporate communications/PR at a large retailer in Bentonville. Left the company last year and now work for the folks that own the majority of shares in said retailer.

Wow, I can't believe I totally overlooked this thread you started several months ago.

First of all, thank you for posting these! As a teenager in Northwest Arkansas in the early to mid 90s, I listened to Power 105.7 a lot in the Music Channel One era. I remember the DJs mentioned they had affiliates in Hornell, NY and Winner, SD. I don't think they had no more than a few at a time. Bazooka Joe did nights for several years there. Mike Chase did primarily afternoons locally, but had a Saturday night mix show that I think also went on Music Channel One. Among some other talent I remember on MC1, besides Richard Kidd and Paul Garcia, I also remember Terry Long (primarily middays locally) and Hank Hammer.

Power 105.7 was a great sounding CHR in the pre-Cumulus era. CHR was more diverse in its sound 15-20 years ago, but Power 105.7 seemed to play more variety with a broad playlist than most CHRs, even at the time. I recall them pretty heavily dayparted between middays and nights. Circa 1992, it wasn't uncommon to hear a classic from the late 60s/early 70s during the middle of the day (Creedence Clearwater Revival "Suzie Q" and Paul McCartney & Wings "Jet" come to mind) and then hear, later that evening, Sir Mix A Lot "Baby Got Back", Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or Green Jelly "Three Little Pigs"!

Just stumbled across this while trying to figure out what happened to "Music Channel One." I remember hearing it on WXZQ 100.1 in southern Ohio when that station launched sometime around 1996-97.

I'm not sure if they used any other programming services in between, but WXZQ now uses the Dial-Global "Hits Now" format.
