AIRCHECKS: Long Island-Connecticut

Just got back from a 2-day business trip to the Foxwoods Casino in CT. And yes, I gave them a donation at the blackjack table.

Wow. I never heard WLNG before. Talk about "Pams" on steroids. Unfortunately, I didn't get the Rusty Potz show. I heard him on the drive up there. He was great with those jingles.

Gosh... John you always post great airchecks but I'd have to say this one was the greatest! Probably the best current aircheck I've ever heard! At least as far as oldies go... why can't modern oldies stations make it fun like WLNG? Another prop to the station...NEWS... other than morning drive on FM it's rare to hear news other than maybe a headline, yet, WLNG had two full-on newscasts within the first hour. Thanks for posting this and if you ever get to record it again I'd love to hear more.

WLNG is certainly one of my favorites. I can hear them during good DX conditions down that way from here in Massachusetts. It'll be awful once 92.3 WPRO-FM turns on IBOC...

I don't understand the previous posts. I can hear WLNG online anytime. You guys write as if WLNG is not available on the net. The news is not available, but everything else is. I get to hear oldies over the stream instead of news and that is better.

Check out Sock Hop Saturday Night 8-Midnight on WLNG.

WLNG sounds very similar to what it sounded like the first time I listened in 1973. Back then they played alternate currents and oldies, so they were 50% oldies.

I was fortunate that my grandparents lived six miles from the WLNG transmitter. So I got to hear them for many years until my grandparents died.

I recorded airchecks of WLNG in 1997 and 1999 at their home in East Hampton.

Well OK, but I had never heard of WLNG before last evening. Next time I'll just post my thoughts about the quality and how much I enjoyed an aircheck posted here directly to the person who posted it via a private e-mail. And like I said before, I liked the news element of the station thanks.

Thanks I'll add it to my favorites list know that I'm aware of it.

Mike,

I appreciated your comments greatly. It's great to know that the work I do the airchecks is appreciated.

And Steven, perhaps you didn't mean it this way, but your reply was harsh. I hadn't been aware of WLNG's format and I've been to eastern Long Island before. Not to mention there are lots of stations streaming, does that imply that we shouldn't aircheck any of them???

Mike, I recorded another 90 minutes on cassette the night before. Gimme a week or two and I'll put that one up too. Thanks again for your nice words. *I* appreciated what you said.

Well, it's actually 4 casinos and 2 hotels with a number of conference rooms, shops, restaurants, etc. all built together as a little neighborhood - all indoors. As you walk between casinos, you feel as though you are sorta outside, walking down a street with restaurants and shops on both sides.

Some of the casinos are slots only, some are 1/2 table games. There are a variety of table games. Most of the table games were quite packed. The slots seemed pretty empty. There were quite a few $15 blackjack tables on both Weds and Thurs night, but the majority were $25. There is a large book making room, which I would have liked to have sat down and bet the horses, but didn't have the time to.

Several keno stations. I won $100 on my 2nd $1 board. But, of course, lost it all.

Additionally, they have a theatre for acts, I see that Foreigner will be there soon and boxing. Club BB King appears to have attractions that bring in some hot women, including the Miss Hawaiian Tropic competition.

The food was awesome. If you go, try the Festival Buffet. Lots of everything.

Make sure you get the Wampum Rewards card if you gamble and use it for everything, slots, table games, keno, etc. If you don't use it for comps, use it when you check out, you'll get something off your bill.

Now, while nice, it doesn't hold a candle to Vegas. First off, it's much more "sedate", if you can call it quite that (because it's not), but it doesn't have that same kind of glitter that Vegas has. I've been to casinos in Arizona, Atlantic City, and Vegas too and none of them has the same glitz as Vegas. Since I don't play the slots usually, I don't know, but I hear the odds are better in Vegas (due to the competition).

Needless to say, 2 days was more than enough at Foxwoods, where you could entertain yourself for a week in Vegas. In fact, you could entertain yourself without gambling for a week there. Foxwoods is in the middle of nowhere, and unless you plan to gamble, there's not much else for you. Not sure about the other CT casino, Mohegan Sun, but my friends who have been there, prefer it.

Good luck Adam if you go.

I don't mind reading your posts. I just thought that everyone knew about WLNG. One of the first things I ever looked for on the net was a WLNG stream.

After the changes with royalties and spots, WLNG cancelled their stream for about a year and a half. But they have been streaming for around two years since then.

It was not meant that way. I started listening to WLNG in 1973 while visiting my grandparents, who were six miles from the transmitter.

There are periodically posts on the oldies board about WLNG and I thought everyone knew about them.

I guess it is all right to record airchecks of stations that stream. I look for airchecks of non-streaming stations, unless it is a special show that I missed, such as WABC Gold.

I am sorry about my tone.

When will KB in Buffalo stream? I am waiting for them.
