Airchecks: The Breeze Network

One of the earliest satellite smooth jazz networks was the Minneapolis based Breeze Network. The network started up in 1987 and ran until early 1991. At its height they probably had between 20 and 30 affiliates. There were two satellite networks that had the format--the other was SMN's "Wave" format, which was based out of Dallas, and was a syndicated version of KTWV's format.

I have posted some of these airchecks in the past, but I am eventually going to put up all of the recordings I have for download for those who may be interested.

The music this network played is somewhat different than what Smooth Jazz evolved into in the mid 1990's. It was also quirkier than the NAC's that were on the air at the time. There were a lot of small label artists featured, some local Twin Cities musicians that got national exposure, more New Age aritsts, some mainstream jazz cuts, and performers that would never fit the format that somehow got played. I liked what I heard, and I'm glad I rolled tape when I did. Hopefully you'll enjoy these as well.

Most of these recordings were made between January and July 1989, when St. Louis had an affiliate. All are encoded at 192/44.1 stereo. Instead of links to specific files, I am posting a link to the folder itself: http://www.4shared.com/dir/8743099/7ddc5e9f/sharing.html

Thanks for uploading. It's nice to hear some good music like this, before the Clear Channels of the world got their hands into things. :)

Spirit

Very nice! Reminds me of the early days of the format when I was hooked on it while living in S Fla. Thanks as I now have most of it on my laptop to play while I travel. (Hotel rooms get boring)
