Airchedk: WJBD-FM 100.1 MHz, Salem, IL

WJBD is a full service AC, based in the southern Illinois city of Salem. It was a station I discovered in the late 1980's. During that time, the station had an AM/FM simulcast (1350 kHz/100.1 MHz) which continued until New Years' Day 1996.

By that time, many small market radio stations had adopted automated or satellite programming during part, or all of the day. Not WJBD. This station was live and local, with an active news department, thanks to the work of Bruce Kropp.

By 1996, even this station began to adopt satellite programming, adopting a country format on the AM side. By the summer of that year, the format was tweaked to sound like most generic soft AC's. The station still has solid news programming during the day, but "Delilah" and "John Tesh" run overnight.

I rolled tape on this station between 1992 and 1996 from my location (60 miles west of Salem), using an Onkyo T-407. The recording I'm posting today was recorded on 15 February 1996. It can be found in this folder:
