AJ IN THE MORNING

Debuted this morning...any thoughts?
Any word on the replacement for Channel 933 yet?
It doesn't seem that they're going to go with a syndicated morning show because otherwise they would have already started playing the tapes. Any ideas for the new morning show on Channel 933? JoJo from KIIS in LA wouldn't be so bad to take over mornings.
AJ in the Morning doesn't sound too bad on Star. Definitely not John and Jer status, but it's ok.

I'm sure they'll get into the groove and start having fun after they settle in, but what I heard this morning could be described with one word:

"Meh."

I fully admit that I'm not in the demo that 94.1 is trying to hit with AJ, but he didn't sound any better or worse than the last time that I sampled the show. It did surprise me that he said they moved studios down the hall from where they were before. Would it have been a huge technical nightmare to leave them in place and just switch the output to 94.1 instead of 933?

The deal here is that the CC stations and the "other" stations are separated. You know, the ones that CC had to divest of a couple or so years back? The one's just down the hall? So anything that goes across the border can't be "associated" with anything that doesn't. Except for engineering, IT, and a few little other inconveniences. So, to go from 93.3 to 94.1 it is necessary to actually change positions, even though you could just change a very little bit or wiring. It's a mess. Worse than traffic at the MYF shuttle landing, and maybe even a little more confusing.

I agree. Reminds me of Valentine's morning gig with Lisa Foxx at (backthen) Star 98.7 in Los Angeles. AJ sounded kind of nervous. Maybe the suits told him he is targeting a different audience and he was a little afraid of doing the same thing he did on Channel 933 because this audience might not react to it as well. But come on, AJ on Star 94.1 isn't too bad. He's married, his wife's having a baby, everyone in the studio is trying to lose weight...it's a mom friendly show. And if it's mom friendly, it can be on the air on Star 94.1. Everyone is saying that AJ on Star 94.1 doesn't work because of demos, I would say that would be the case if Howard Stern or Adam Carolla were to be on Star. AJ is just another version of Valentine, coming from a CHR crossing over onto the AC.

I'd be nervous too. If he bombs out at 94.1 he has seen what has happened to the other morning shows and sure as heck doesn't want to follow them out the door. I'm sure the suits are giving him some leeway at the beginning but everyone at Granite Ridge will be looking real close at the numbers when they come in.

Also, does anyone know how much time is left on AJ's contract?

If he had any brains he would have said no-thanks. Trying to follow the most popular morning team in San Diego, with a nice ripe group of pissed off listeners is a bad idea. Well it's clear channel so he should expect to get out the vaseline and just deal with whatver happens. Bottom line -- don't expect to be in the market in a year and a half.

When I think of all that CC has done to SD radio over the last many years its really a shame. Where was the government letting them put all these properties together and creating a colossal mountain of crap.

I'm stay-at-home dad and have been chauffeuring my son now 10-year-old son back and forth to school since he started. San Diego morning radio turned me into a morning KPBS listener because most morning shows are not suitable to listen to when you have kids in the car and I think a whole lot of moms have stopped listening to radio as its standards dropped lower and lower and it seemed like radio execs thought the typical listener was someone whose favorite movie was Jacka**. Forget "mom friendly," think "family friendly" and no doubt Star will now move even further from that than it was with the soap-opera of the J&J dysfunctional family.

I listened to just a bit of Star this morning and I must say that AJ never misses a chance to step on everyone else or even on pre-recorded bits such as TV show clips...very sloppy sounding.

Since 93.3 and 94.1 are both US licenses, there is no "separation" issue. Their studios are on the same hallway, with the 105.3 studios between them. All the studios on this hallway were constructed with large morning shows in mind. All four studio "sets" consist of a Control Room, News/Producer Booth, and a Production Studio, (used during the mornings for talent or a producer). The smaller studios were built on a different hallway and were not originally designed for large shows. (Although some have been modified to accommodate them.) The original layout facilitated blocking these studios off from the CC space when the Mexican FM's were sold to Finest City. As RadeoEngineer points out, Engineering and IT for the Finest City stations are provided by CC. Changing the studio output-to-audio processing/STL input would not have been a huge deal, but the Prophet I/O, Telco, and other ancilliary feeds for SIX studios would also have to have been changed. This would have been a lot of unnecessary work for no good purpose. It was easier to simply walk the bodies down the hall. Since the 94.1 studios were seriously upgraded when J&J arrived and have a lot more bells and whistles than the 93.3 studios, I suspect that AJ didn't fight too hard...

Thanks Radiode. I got 93.3 confused with being a Mexican license. My mistake. You'd think after running up and down San Miguel for 20 years I'd remember who's up there.

New station = new music= new demo = give him some time. There are so many things that go into making a successful show. Many times things can be out of your control as the host- so you do the best you can and that is all you can do. In today's ppm enviroment there is still an element of following your gut as well- PPM should just re-inforce that and not really be a decision maker with our current in-tabs.... anyway I have never really heard alot of AJ but folks say he is quite talented and Gina is a pal so lets watch them grow.

I have my own problems......I am eating strawberry ice cream at 9:43 pm, my house smells like smoke and we start in Chicago tomorrow.....
