AJC and WSB

Yeah. I would never know WSB-AM is now simulcast on FM if they didn't pound me over the head with it every 30 seconds or so. Oh, and while I'm here I might as well note that the River is "new".

They did the same thing in one of their stories on the passing of Royal Marshall. I couldn't believe it.

I think Rodney Ho started the "new" thing when the FM simulcast started. He was poking a little fun at the station for saying it every 3 seconds. It looks like it has spread.

Branding has always been very important at White Columns. When I worked there part time 12 years ago & we had a contest winner say B98 point 5, we were instructed to always say: "I'm sorry, could you please repeat that & say 'B98 point 5 FM'?"
Also when the AM had the Braves, we were forbidden to refer to the stadium as "The Ted" or "The Ted on the Hank"... it was always to be called "Turner Field" we couldn't even say "Turner Field on Hank Aaron Boulevard", ever - no exceptions. I guess in return for the "AM 750 & now 95.5FM Newstalk WSB" reference always in print, now you'll never hear "the local newspaper" on the radio...

It seems that the entire Cox organization is under orders to push this tag line. "AM 750 and NOW 95.5 FM News/Talk WSB" has been showing up in news articles all throughout the AJC and last week even Cynthia Tucker, in her column, referred to conservative talk shows on "AM 750 and NOW 95.5 FM News/Talk WSB". The newspaper even has to emphasize and bold the "NOW" in the tagline.

I don't like it....it's not right.....but it's good marketing.

Now that it's Cox Media Group, the company is really mixing it up with its executives. Jayne Williams, who had been General Sales Manager at WSB-TV, received a promotion to Cox corporate several years ago before the Cox Media Group umbrella was formed. She still worked with the TV stations. Recently, she was promoted to Publisher of Cox's Austin newspaper. For a while, Cox Radio/Atlanta had a Market Manager/Sales, Dan Kearney, and a Market Manager/Programming, Tony Kidd. They reported to a Regional VP out of Florida. Last fall, Dan Kearney was promoted to run the Atlanta stations, and the Regional VP from Florida moved to a Cox newspaper, I believe as Publisher.

Would they have let someone other than Rodney Ho make a reference to "WGST, The News Monster" back in the day before CC screwed them up?

What is Cox's obsession with the "NEW" branding? In Greenville, we've had the "NEW" Hot 98.1 since 2001!

The only thing missing from this equation would be if Cox would borrow branding from like laundry detergent and breakfast cereal, think "better" and "improved". And repeated over and over and over from your favorite B98.5 FM air personalities and on-air imaging! I can hear it now:

"B98.5 FM's new 98 at 9, now with even better music!"

"Your start of the workday never sounded better with B98.5 FM's new and improved 98 at 9!"

"Atlanta's Longest Music Sweep is now even better! The new 98 at 9."

"I'm Jordan Graye making way for Kelly McCoy as he kicks off another new and improved 50 minute music hour! B98.5 FM's 50 minute music hours now sound even better with more of your favorite music! It's great! How fantastic is that?! Wow! Kelly's next!"

"B98.5 FM's new and improved Big Money Buzzer is now even bigger with more money, more winners, and more chances to win! B98.5 FM!"

Just like in Phoenix where there's an incestuous relationship (Gannett) between
the local McPaper (Arizona Socialist Republic) and TV Mc12 (KPNX Mesa).

"It's not about us, it's about you. Now don't forget to tweet Tram." ;D

Well....Cox has some of the worst sounding radio stations in a lot of the markets they're in. Dull and boring can describe about every station they own. Why not just call EVERYTHING NEW and NOW!

Cox is making money in radio. You have to give them credit. BTW I am not a Cox employee.

They are. And they - like the majority of daily newspapers - are losing the coprporate shirt on the AJC. So, destroying what little credibility it might have had (It never had more than a little) in hopes of boosting the broadcast operation isn't a bad move.

Not sure I agree with you, LJ. The AJC was of course forced to downsize the newspaper, but I think they're doing some good things to improve the product. I think this thing is due to Cox's new philosophy that they should be using all of their resources to bolster each other in any way possible. And I think this particular one is a mistake.
