Akron Talkradio Icon Dies

Howie Chizek, midday talk host on WNIR, Kent, Ohio (Akron) passed away Saturday at age 65.

Howie had been with WNIR since the early 1970's...and his 10am-3pm M-F shift had great adult ratings for decades and decades. He was "the franchise" for WNIR.

Chizek spent 17 years as well as the P.A. announcer for the NBA Cleveland Cavaliers.

There are stories all over the internet about Howie's passing. One of which is on the website of the Akron Beacon Journal: www.ohio.com

Supposedly Wikipedia claims Chizek had been in the same shift, doing the same regular, local call-in radio talk show on the same station longer than anybody in talk radio history.

Howie was The King! ;D WNIR is run of the more unique stations in the nation in that the majority of its programming is local for nearly 18 hours a day, and live almost 23 hours.

Howie's show was different that although he could talk about any subject that a caller would bring up, be it advice on gas bills, high school sports or politics.

And, who could forget the Howie-isms such as "Colder Than A Witch's Begonia", "Well I'll Be A Blue Nosed Gopher" and "Fanorkle."

Howie and WNIR also introduced the world to their cadre of callers to the station such as Couch Burner, Jason, Mr. Stow, Mr. Youngstown, The Boosh Man, Phone Booth Guy, Weezie, Uncle Craig, The Old Prospector, Dumpster Diver and many more.

His death has gotten national and international exposure with a piece on Mike Gallagher's show and postings on radio boards in England.
