Al Bernstein's Replacement At WLTW... Nobody

Well, sorta... WLTW PD Jim Ryan says the station is working on lengthening the shifts of the morning (Karen Carson, Christine Nagy) and midday (Valerie Smaldone) shows to cover the difference. "Unfortunately, three-hour shifts are just becoming less and less economical," Ryan told the New York Daily News (link to story unavailable; this story was reported in All Access).

My guess is Carson & Nagy go through 10 am with Smaldone picking up the torch at that time.

Jim Ryan proves it again.

Jim Ryan is the SMARTEST man in radio.

Pure Genius.

My guess is that Ryan did not institute this latest change. Like the others it was forced on him by Clear Channel.
All of the other changes that have happened have been rammed down his throat to save money, or as in the case of dropping the "Lite" moniker, done because of the stupidity of the programming suits at CC. They feel that Logo's, monikers et al are no longer needed with the PPM, but maybe they'll realize that you still need to have something the average listener can latch on to, like a real name for the station and not just a frequency. You know, when a station bills the kind of money that LTW does it makes little sense to fire heritage jocks in this way other than to say its greed. On the other hand, 3 hour shifts are not very common anymore and on a station like Lite FM it was a true luxury.

Short shifts may not be common anymore but it does happen. On KJOY Bill Edwards does 2-5PM. More relevant is Clearchannel station Q104 has no problem allowing Bob Buchman to share afternoon drive with Ken Dashow with Buchman doing a brief two-hour shift from 2-4 with Dashow sliding in from 4-8. Nobody is suggesting that it would be more economical to terminate Buchman and give the whole shift to Dashow from 2-7, nor is it likely that anyone would ever suggest such a thing.

Espeically considering Buchman is Q's PD. I guess it's some kind of special arrangement that allows him to do an odd airshift while he continues his craft behind the scenes.

Now regarding the Q, it might have been funny if the Radio Chick was still doing 6-9 AM mornings, and that show was let go with the reason being "three hour shifts are no longer economical."

Do you think Jim Ryan is sat looking at the ratings wondering where it all went wrong?

Seeing what has happened at WLTW over the past year, it's not rocket science to figure out why Z100 is back at number one is it?
