Al Boyer was the father of one of my friends when I was growing up in Winchester, MA. I am still in touch with the friend (Dave Boyer) today.
Al Boyer opposed the Vietnam War and worked on Eugene McCarthy's presidential campaign in 1968. Opposition to the war was controversial at the time, and Al became aware that he was under surveillance for his actions. All his mail began to arrive at his home already opened, which he took to be a threat (naturally), and in another incident, when campaign workers proposed meeting for a friendly game of poker after campaigning, one of the workers (who also happened to be a neighbor of the Boyers) pulled Al aside, showed Al a badge, and told him the "authorities" (unnamed) were looking for an excuse to arrest him. At that time blue laws against gambling were fairly serious, and Al convinced the group to abandon these plans.
Al was so angry about these incidents he took a job offer in Toronto, CA, deciding he was fed up with the United States. He also wanted to be sure his son David would not be drafted for the war. The family moved to Oakville, Ontario in 1968.
Al Boyer died recently - I think it was last year (2014). He had been in a nursing home for a while. His wife Agnes died... in the 90s, I believe. Besides his son he had a daughter, Diane, who is married and has one grown daughter.
