Al Gardner's Dream comes to an end

Nice guy Al's dream of returning to his hometown of Philadelphia has come to an end. According to Tom Taylor's NOW newsletter, Al didn’t quite make it to the one-year mark, as one of the few local presences at Merlin’s conservative talk WWIQ, Philadelphia (106.9). “Going back home again” doesn’t always work out, and the Philly native is part of what could be a budget cutback at “IQ 106.9.”

As you might know, his longtime pal Randy Michaels suggested he return to Philadelphia from Greater Media’s news/talk WBT, and now the rumors about the Philly station’s future ownership just get louder on the VU meter. Michael's company bought then-Christian station from Harold Camping’s Family Stations for $22.5 million and converted it to talk over a year ago, installing Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, John Batchelor and Michael Savage.

The age 6+ AQH shares in Arbitron have oscillated all over the place – from a 1.9 last September to a 2.7, then 3.6, a 2.7, a 1.8 and a January 2.5. Mornings will now be anchored by New York-based Lionel and Michelle Murillo – though you also hear the name of New York-based journalist Hilarie Barsky.

I would guess that Al's options are quite limited due to his age. Doubtful that he will return to WBT where he spent over a decade in morning drive before moving on to Philly.

I don't know Al personally but I give him credit for surviving at WBT for over a decade. Other equally talented folks did not fair as well. I think it's safe to assume he is a smart man and knew in advance there was a risk in moving to Philadelphia. Sometimes you just have to go for it rather than wonder what might have been. Whatever he decides to do I'm sure he will do fine.
