Al Sharpton on 1600 AM and national advertisers

Sometimes I listen to Al Sharpton on 1600 AM.

I've noticed that national advertisers are all over his show.

McDonald's
Home Depot
Lowe's
GEICO
Netflix

1600 AM gets very low ratings.

Al Sharpton's show isn't even on during drive time. It's on from 8-10p and not even live.

So why do these companies(some are LNA's)flock to his program?
 
$5 they're barter spots for whatever national news WWRL carries. And trade spots for show prep services, etc.

They're not buying the spots on WWRL to reach 3 people.

When I was at a station that was an ABC affiliate, that's where all of those spots came from. None were bought locally on the station. They're clearing them in a time slot where it doesn't matter, and there are no local spots to fill the holes.
 
I listen to a decent amount of "talk" radio from both conservatives and liberals.

Honestly, I have never heard so many national advertisers on one show ever. Al is the only voice on 1600 AM who has such an impressive inventory while everyone else is selling gold and hard drive backup.

I get the feeling that these advertisers are going out of their way to buy time on his show for some reason.

Many LNA's won't even allow their spots to be heard on any form of political commentary programming.
 
But they're the same advertisers as all of the other networks. I doubt they are real buys when WWRL is on flea power after 8pm.

Flee power? They are a 5 KW full time AM facility. Yes, market coverage is limited due to dial location and directional pattern but they are hardly flea powered ala; the post sunset daytimers which operate at 10 watts post sunset. WMCA which has much better coverage is 5 KW full time, where WWRL is 25/5 KW. It's all about dial position & RF competition, not power.

If you're compairing them to stations like WOR & WABC there are few markets with as many high powered broadcasters.


An example of what I am talking about can be heard when one tries to listen to WCAU, a 50 KW Non D station on 1210 Khz from Philadelphia, when in Manhattan. They can barely be heard here. On the other hand, WCBS comes in like a local in Delaware, during the day.
 
I used to produce a show that aired on WWRL about 10 years ago. The daytime signal sucked and night was even worse. In most of NJ at night it's gone. Anywhere north of the GWB it was gone after sunset. Forget Staten Island too.

And yes, compared to the big NYC AM's, which is where the ad buys go, it IS flea powered. Especially all the way at the end of the "old" AM dial. 5kW up there doesn't go very far, especially on night pattern.

A lot of the reason why WCBS comes in like a local is their superior dial position. 880 has better groundwave than 1210. Couple that with their excellent antenna system, sitting in the salt water, and it takes off like a rocket.

I haven't looked at the database to see what 1210's antenna system is... but it isn't in as good a location, ground conductivity wise, as 880/660.

I was thinking, if it's politically incorrect to be on Rush/Beck/Hannity, maybe corporate America sees Sharpton's radio show as politically correct.

When an advertisers buys on a show like his, whether it be through a local station or syndicator, they're saying that they support civil rights. If these companies weren't on Al's show, he'd be complaining about racism against black talk radio.

Check the clock. His network spots air for either 2 minutes at :15 and :45 or 1 minute at the bottom of the hour. I'm curious as to where the spots fall.

I just don't see the big advertisers buying the Sharpton show given his sketchy history and low ratings (the ratings page is a good laugh, .4, .3 etc.). They very well could be spots being cleared for the prep services used by the network itself.

Thanks. It's always the first commercial break that has the national advertisers. Later spots are sex pills.

I actually do see the big advertisers buying Sharpton regardless of his history. It's a great way to keep Sharpton from extorting money from them. Now they don't have to worry about Sharpton causing them serious trouble. And white people aren't going to call McDonald's or Home Depot and threaten to boycott for advertising on Sharpton.

they don't need to update. their sales tactics and appeal to advertisers are different than that of any other talker.
