Alabama as old time country

US 103.5 was playing a song by Brad Paisley about Alabama that made them sound as historic and old school as the Texas Plowboys. I am so old

I live just 45 minutes from their hometown. Remember those guys before they had "super" in front of the word star. Their old tour bus in in the Alabama Music Hall of Fame now. And yes, guess WE are old.

Completely incorrect verbiage!!!

Alabama, if one must categorize, "is" TRADITIONAL COUNTRY.

I can't relate to "old time" when speaking of any genre. I remember a lotta "good o' boys (and girls)" that were, and in some cases still are, "traditional" country entertainers/musicians/songwriters but I'm not familiar with "old time" country. Hank Williams, Lefty Frezel, Stonewall Jackson, Roy Drusky, Tex Ritter, Red Steagal, Wynn Stewart, Hank Thompson, Ray Price, George Jones, Faron Young, Gene Watson, Carl Smith, Buck Owens, Porter Wagoner, Bill Anderson, Leroy VanDyke, Hank Snow, Ferlin Husky, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, George Morgan, Dave Dudley, Freddie Hart, David Houston, Del Reeves, Jim Reeves, Chet Atkins, Floyd Cramer, Johnny Gimble, Roy Clark, Sonny James, Phil Baugh, Marty Robbins, Billy Walker, Roger Miller, Buddy Emmons, Charlie McCoy, Bobby Bare, Bob Wills, Eddy Arnold, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Conway Twitty, Johnny Paycheck, Willie Nelson (wrote my very favorite country song "Crazy"), Waylon Jennings, Kitty Wells, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Liz Anderson, Lynn Anderson, PATSY CLINE, Leona Williams, Donna Fargo, Dolly Pardon, Janie Frickie, Jeanie Pruitt, Dotty West, The Statler Brothers, Jerry Reid, Minnie Pearl, Grandpa Jones, Boots Randolph, Johnny Horton, Hank Locklin, Reba McIntire, Don Gibson, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Tom T. Hall, Jack Greene, Mel Tillis, Web Pierce, Roy Rogers, Jimmy Dean, Brenda Lee, Connie Stevens and a "few others", LOL, made what was, is and always will be "traditional" country music but there certainly wasn't and there isn't anything "old time" about it. Long winded, opinionated "old timer" aren't I???? LOL

Sorry------I meant traditional---and you just listed about every artist I love. Maybe Roy Rogers is a little too traditional for me ;D I think you skipped Roy Acuff, Mac Wiseman, Flatt and Scruggs, Bill Monroe, Kris Kristopherson, Bosephus, Carl Perkins, June Carter Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis

Any list of country greats that doesn't include Gary Stewart is not complete. :)

Re: Alabma as old time country

I ended by saying "and a few others". :D I was on my 3rd (possibly 4th) glass of Pinot Noir and a wee bit fuzzy in ye' ole' memory. I couldn't agree more regarding Gary Stewart. He, like Jim Reeves, David Houston and Roger Miller, was taken away from us much much too soon!! I intentionally left out Bocephus (Hank Jr.) because I couldn't really decide if he was "traditional" country or not. I've seen him live several times and, quite frankly, I was embarrassed for him. No, I do not care to elaborate on that! I also left out Earl, Lester and Bill simply because I do not view them as "traditional country". In my opinion they are strictly Bluegrass which, again in my opinion, is a genre all it's own. I also left out Charlie Daniels intentionally as I view him as a one man show in a genre that's all his own that never will be duplicated!! June Carter Cash, yes, certainly! Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis were also left out intentionally, just as Charlie Rich was; all three of them were traditionally rock and roll gone country for a few smash hits gone back to rock and roll. Again, just my opinion. I also forgot Ernest Tubb, Little Jimmy Dickens, Barbara Fairchild, Barbara Mandrell, Jeanie Sealy, Jeanie C. Riley, Roy Acuff, Emylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs (bluegrass?), Jean Shepard, The Judds, Don Williams, Patsy Montana, Keith Whitley, Pam Tillis, Rodney Crowell, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Clint Black, Brad Paisley, Kenny Rogers (never liked him), Crystal Gayle (Loretta's little sister), Mickey Giley, Kathy Matea, Earl Thomas Conley, Tanya Tucker, Vern Gosdin, Gene Autry, Red Foley, CHARLIE PRIDE, Johnny Rodriguez and Jimmie Rodgers and I'm sure "a few more" LOL. ;D

Footnote: I left out George Strait, Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley and came close to leaving out Reba McIntire intentionally because they are so young and still hot on the charts and I was trying to concentrate on the "good o' boys and girls of yesteryear" that helped pave the way for traditional country. It's difficult to draw the line and not offend someone!

At any rate, It's been a lot of fun reflecting and having the opportunity to post my opinion, hopefully tastefully, as I feel qualified to comment so many of the folks I've mentioned which started the day I was born with Faron Young being Grandma's half brother and it went from there. I remember one party in particular at Grandma's house in St. Louis when I was suppose to be in bed I sneaked out the back door, when downstairs and talked with Carl Smith, George Morgan and Del Reeves. I never did get caught!! I have black and white glossy's from the late 50's, 60's and 70's that I wouldn't take a million dollars for!! My favorite, taken February 1962 in Tulsa, OK, is a 5 X 7 b & w glossy, sitting on a wooden bench, on the left Kitty Wells leaning right, on the right Patsy Cline leaning left, both of their heads touching and both of their eyes looking down at ME in the middle!
