Alan Colmes moves from KTLK to KGIL

KGIL has added Alan Colmes to its evening schedule.

KGIL is starting to look like a real radio station. If only
they could get some more signal strength they could take away some audience share from the other market players.

As it stands now, if someone turns on an electric toothbrush
in another building, I lose the signal.

No chance of more signal, they are already tightly squeezed in as they were a later arrival at 1260. KYA, now KSFB, San Francisco preceded them by many years. Under Mt. Wilson the power was increased to 20KW days and 7.5 at night from 5KW. They use a tight directional pattern which accounts for your problem. I am in North Hollywood, so it is much stronger and comes in clearer than KTLK which is also tightly directional after they went from 5KW to 50KW.

They are getting a serious lineup, mixing conservative with liberal. The only weak link as I see it is Larry King who besides being a lame interviewer is also simultaneously available on CNN. A serious problem is that their signal issues make getting a true reflection of how they play ratings wise nearly impossible. I think part of the KTLK low ratings performance can be accounted for by their lack of uniform penetration in the market. Unfortunately KGIL is even more challenged. Add to that the fact that the LA market is pretty much saturated for talk radio stations with KFI drawing the lion's share of the ratings.

Go online to:    www.1260.am

Streaming LIVE much of the time. Jackson available on-demand. Clear, strong signal.

Your neighbors can start brushing their teeth again.

Boortz won't play in LA (if anyone stops listening to Handel long enough to give him a chance), Jackson is past his prime, and the rest of the advice talk lineup consists of the B-rung players who aren't that interesting. Alan Colmes is a nice guy, but his radio show isn't going anywhere huge. Do you think there is any sort of programming consistency at 1260 or do you think they just slap people in there based on name or their current favorite affiliate sales rep?

As someone who used to call him Neal Bores I have to say I have been somewhat converted. There is no conflict for me as I only listen to the first part of Handel up to 6am. Bortz is a heck of a lot less abrasive than Rush and I prefer him to Laura Ingraham for some reason. The problem here is the KGIL signal and the saturation of the market. I would have liked to have a better chance to hear Glenn Beck. Especially in this year of the Presidential races I like to hear as many different takes so hopefully I can sort a speck of truth out of it all of the blather.

I find Dr. Joy a joy ;D as compared to the obnoxiousness of Dr. Laura and I don't know how you could consider Dr. Drew a b-rung player. He has a long history with Love-Line and other programs. Michael Jackson still does fantastic interviews though his age is showing a bit. His total commitment to Hillary is a bit much for me to deal with though.

Since KGIL is taking contract news services from AP and Metro though they lack the punch of KFI which I think has the best news coverage of local stuff especially. So add that to the coverage issues and the fact that they are against established programming and I have to wonder how long it will be until Mr. Levine spins the Wheel of Format again.

540 would be better served to fill the loss of "liberal" radio in San Diego. If they continue the 540/1260 combo, Ed Schultz would be a good pick up.

Loveline has become pretty bad. Even if you consider it a top-rung show, Dr. Drew on his own, doing whatever it is he's doing on KGIL, ain't top-notch programming.

The fact anyone is comparing this to KFI is silly. KFI will be #1 forever. KGIL will never crack a 0.3. Because of that, they will have mediocre news services piping in bad sounding newscasts. KGIL is designed to be a repeater of weak talk shows for people over 90. KFI has a much different approach.

I never made a comparison to KFI, except to note that the contracted news services used by KGIL can never be as good as the local news provided by KFI which has what I consider to be the best, exceeding either of our two local all news stations. Also, even if God gives Saul a 50KW class A signal nothing he could produce or purchase will knock Handel off his mountain. All I meant was that Neal Bortz is not all that bad. I was also prepared to dismiss Dr. Drew based solely upon my perception of Love Line.

I also noted that Micheal Jackson is in fact showing his age but that in my opinion his interviewing skills are to be acknowledged. I haven't listened to most of the KGIL weekend offering so I can offer no substantiated opinions, so if you have I defer to you on those. Nobody with half a mind can say that Larry King is compelling radio, not even those of us a lot closer to 90 than you.

I have listened to some talk shows not available here, some are not even syndicated and trust me KGIL is not bottom rung, but not top rung either. More like somewhere in the intervening sections of the ladder, some nearer the top and others nearer the bottom. Given the signal challenge and their frugal owner it will be never attract top rung talent, no Handel on anything for AM 1260-540. So as I noted it only remains to be seen when the Wheel of Formats spins again.

Well, you are indeed correct. In many markets where there are far fewer ethnic listeners, the dog AMs run these really bad talk formats with whoever's left. Phoenix at one time had 8 talk stations and 3 sports stations. San Fran has about that now. You never have more than two good ones, maybe a marginal one with a 0.8, and the rest are losers. So, yes, the format wheel will probably spin again, although I don't know enough to say what. In many of the aforementioned cases, the owner eventually throws in the towel. Probably not the case for 1260, although I think Saul probably actually thinks 1260 is going to be some kind of great success.

It's interesting that Ed has dissapeared from both L.A. and San Diego and hasn't returned.

Ed Schultz or Peter B. Collins would do well on KTLK delayed afternoon drive, much better than Rachel Maddow.

Of note, "KASH 1700" (XEKTT 1700) has Lionel, 1A-4A, and overnights on weekends, along w/ Stacy Taylor m-f 3p-6p.

1700 and 1260 both have a good chance to increase ratings, and get KLSD and KTLK listeners.
