Alan Cox's contract...

Cox mentioned today that his 3 year contract with Clear Channel is up in a month or so and he would have an announcement on Monday concerning his future.

Any leaks or guesses on what his "announcement" might be?

If they're going public with it, I would guess he's re-upping.

It'd be very strange for him to come on, say he's leaving, and be a lame duck for a month.

Anybody hear what his announcement was today?

Cox only wanted to sign a 1 yr contract, and CC wanted him for 3. He compromised for a 2 yr deal. Also, he will be doing morning drive in Detroit. He will be based in Cleveland, for now, and do the Detroit show from here on most days but may spend some time up there and perhaps do his WMMS show from there, from time to time.

I like Alan's show and appreciate his talent, but he has always come off as a guy who thinks Cleveland is a puny little stop-over place on his way back to his beloved Chicago or another bigger market. He takes shots at Cleveland, subtly, and just never has felt to me like he wanted to be here long term.

Looks like with the success he is building in afternoon drive on MMS, he may be on his way to getting his wish.

Just my opinion.

If you had a chance to work in your hometown, which is also market #3, I'm sure you'd take it. I don't begrudge him that. With that said... he could be a Big Fish here. Grass isn't always greener.

Which DET station? 106.7/The D?

Alan also has kids from a previous relationship and he talks about visiting them up in Michigan. Sounds like a deal where he will get to spend more time with them.

Is Chad Zumock in talks w/ 92.3 The Fan? Alan Cox signed a two year deal w/ WMMS but Chad Zumock has not signed..according to an inside source I know, hes doing a Clev sports related TV show for Sportstime Ohio and has had casual talks w/ 92.3 The Fan...I'm not sure if he has a non compete but what show would they put him on? this could get very interesting!

Wow, that would be a big story. I have heard Chad say several times how much he loves working with Alan and that Alan is his favorite talk show host, ever. May have been schticky pandering, but didnt appear to be so at the time. He also loves the "idiocy" of the show. Im not so sure he would fly as a sports guy, solely.

I did notice he was deadly silent when Alan was making his announcement. Strangely silent, I remember thinking. He has spoken about his TV show on the air, though.

Id be shocked if he left the show. I havent heard anything about this, but I dont have the "inside sources" that you appear to have.

The first 3 year contract is up in the begining of December. If there are any legs to this, we will find out shortly.

Chad is fine where he is, IMHO. Unless the fan would make major changes... They're not blowing up am drive, not letting Baskin and Phelps go no matter what anyone else thinks, not enough Mic time for him with Adam and Fox, and Carman doesn't need a sidekick, nor would I expect a guy in PM drive to move to nights.

Only long shot thought... In preparation for CBS' national feed, which will bring on the sports babe from 1-6am, does CBS tinker with some time slots and add another show instead of carrying one hour of whatever they choose to air at midnight?

I think that 92.3 will put the soon-to-be CBS Sports Radio flagship "Jim Rome Show" somewhere on the schedule -- either a live 12-3p clearance or perhaps on delay (12-3a perhaps?)

The temptation is too great for the Fan not to air what had been for many years the centerpiece show of their main competitor.

Id be shocked and disapointed if Rome went to 92.3 during the day. This isnt 1998 any longer, Rome aint what he used to be. Live and local is the way to go. If they deviate from this premise, Id be shocked.

If this were most other markets, I'd agree with you. But C-Town is a bit of a different animal.

Don't get me wrong...I'm not saying it's gonna happen, but it wouldn't surprise me if The Fan tried to squeeze a little more juice out of Rome. His show is still popular here, there was a bit of an outcry when hour 1 went to KNR 2, and the thought of poaching their competition's long time anchor show and throwing it back at them can't be ignored.

Chad might be lucky to still be on the air at WMMS after his latest OVI episode. Stations usually don't want that type of publicity with their stations. I don't wish ill on anyone but the guy is constantly making references to driving drunk and it somehow comes off to the average listener as being cool to do so. Now with his 2nd OVI in a couple of years it reflects badly on WMMS. I hope the guy straightens out his life and gets some help. Drinking and driving is not cool. ::)

Rome sounds old and dated. His act wore thin a decade ago...IMHO.

Put Jim Rome on 923TheFan? I'll flip to WKNR or ESPN network. Can't stand Jim Rome. Respect his success...just not my type of sportstalk.

Now that Chad's a free agent, could CBS pick him up for The Fan or NCX?

No and no.

The Fan has too much going on as it is with CBS Sports Radio starting up, and Chad doesn't fit the NCX mullet rock motif.

98.5's schedule has been largely untouched in 20 years, and Slats has stabilized AMD.
