Alan Osmond of Osmond Brothers

Alan Osmond, the oldest of the Osmond Brothers, has died:

The Osmond Brothers made numerous TV appearances. They were regulars on The Andy Williams Show in the 70s. They had a #1 song with One Bad Apple in 1971. The family owned the Osmond Entertainment Center, a TV production facility in Orem Utah. They sold it in 1989. Of course the most famous of the Osmonds are Donny & Marie.

Alan was the oldest performing Osmond out of 9 children. There are 2 older brothers, Tom and Virl, but they did not perform, due to issues with hearing. Deafness runs in the family. Alan Osmond was a talented writer and producer. The family got kidded a lot about being squeaky clean goody-goodies, but they actually can sing and entertain. I saw Donny and Marie in Vegas, where they did a show based on classic rock tunes -- and they were really good. This was a hugely popular act back in the early 70's. --- D.

I thought that was The Jackson 5. And then when I said that somewhere, one response was that there was no way I could confuse The Osmonds and The Jacksons. Well, yes I could. As much as i like Adny Williams now, I was not familiar with his variety show and had never seen it. I would certainly have liked their style of music when they were on that show.

I don't know why I didn't watch their show. I would have liked it. I do remember "I'm a little bit country, I'm a little bit rock and roll." Maybe I saw a few episodes.

Lucille Ball's character liked him, on the series she had in the 70s. She said his music gave her a headache but it was worth the headache.

The songwriter's name is George Jackson, no relation, who worked at a studio in Muscle Shoals AL. That's where the Osmonds recorded it. Jackson wrote it for the Jackson 5, but they chose a similar song called "ABC." So he pitched it to the Osmonds when they were there. Donny sang the lead that had been meant for Michael. I think they were about the same age.

George Jackson also wrote Old Time Rock & Roll for Bob Seger. It was also recorded at the same studio in Muscle Shoals.
