Alaska AM DX

Had english classic hits music on 1611khz shortly after 1400UTC here in Alaska today (Mon Sept. 27th) and it in theory could've been a few stations based upon a broad oldies/classic hits definition. I wasnt having any luck finding a matching webstream.. then i heard some commercials in what I presume to be Filipino.... DING! DWNX Milaor (Caramines Sur)

Congratulations on another stellar catch from the far north. I have a local WSDOT TIS on 1610 causing trouble (occasionally I can hear CHHA's tropical/Portuguese music underneath when conditions are great).

thanks!

When i was in Laramie, i had a 10 watt TIS on 1610 about 3 miles away as the crow flies and heard CHHA several times.

I smell a thread idea! TIS stations and how audible (or not) they actually are in it's designated town. Yay or nay, or somewhere in between?

For the record, mine is 530 WPQZ500 (10 watts), and it provides a noisy, but understandable signal to my house, but it does better by Dell Range.

I could hear that 530 in Laramie, sometimes... very poorly.

That one seems less efficient than some of the 1610's, I've heard, like the Fort Collins one and the Rapid City one. At least you did snag that one!

thats because of the antenna..... 1/4 wave at 1610 is like 120 feet or so. 1/4 wave at 530 is god.. 500 feet or so. Some of these use whip antennas 10 feet tall attached to a small box. The 1610 in laramie uses a 40, 50 foot tall tower with a capacitance hat.. the shorter antenna is more efficient at higher frequencies

Meanwhile in Chicago, I consider it a victory if I get a new AM station as far away as South Carolina. Nice catches!
What a difference a half-century of so makes. Around 1961, on Chicago's "own" 1000 kHz I got Rotorua, NZ, with 10 kw clear enough to log and get a verification back from at my location in NE Ohio!

Excellent catch!

I heard DWNX in January 2020 on the Arctic SDR at around 2000 UTC. That's about the same distance as you are from Naga, about 5,000 miles. Those Filipino stations are pretty distinctive with the typical very excited delivery and lots of reverb. They were playing the Police when I heard them. If the conditions are good this year, it's one to try on the Arctic SDR as it's a pretty clear frequency.

THe m,usic was distinctive enough to make me pause.. and it didnt take much to tell it wasnt the usual Asian language stuff....... what makes it easier was i dont think china, japan or either of the kroeas has anything on 1611.. so when i heard non english, that narrowed it down easy peazy

Those stations are interesting - they will often "flip" between English and a local language within a segment, or even within a sentence, so it's quite easy to hear what's being discussed even as a non-speaker of their language. You're right about the delivery - lots of excitable news reporting with over-the-top sound effects, whooshes and bangs and reverb, and incredibly long ad breaks, mostly for various medical and food products.

I'm guessing WCFL was off the air on Monday morning.
WCFL was always off on Monday mornings. So was Seattle, as well as Mexico City and the Brazilian, Radio Record, was, unusually, not coming in due to strange conditions favoring the Pacific. The bellwether station for the Pacific for East Coasters back then was KORL 650 in Honolulu. If it came in, then finding 830 with the 250 watt KIKI made it obvious that all the possible NZ and Australian channels should be searched.

CNR1 945khz is a daily log here, and should be at 400kw. It varies form noisy to super strong and today I heard something there today I've never heard before.

LIVE basketball play by play in chinese.

I have NO idea what game/who but I also heard what *sounded like* a british accented english male voice in the background. They were at some game at a media table.

What gave it away as a basketball game? The signal was so strong, I was able to widen the audio to 3khz and hear the shoes squeaking on the floor as they moved about the court!

Yes I remember well. I also used to hear Mexico City when WCFL was off, but never got KOMO unfortunately.
Pretty much my experience as well. WCFL off, but my memory was that XEOY was usually still on. Either way, no KOMO. Monday morning at my home location was also my time for KOMA without WLAC and WCKY to step on it. (At my college location in Iowa, KOMA was strong enough so that WLAC and WCKY were not an issue. On the contrary, if you didn't care for the song playing on KOMA, you just nudged the dial over to John R's all night show on WLAC.)

My memory of KOMA at night in the Chicago area was sometimes it could be strong and other times there was lots of fading. If you went west where you were in Iowa or even further west it was a monster.

Is that what we call Taglish?

Here's a few logs and clips from Just East Of The Ass end Of Gods Creation Nowhere aka McGrath, Alaska using a CC Skywave and Debock 5" FSL Antenna

"Magic Talk", 1107kHz Tauranga, NZ at 1525UTC on Fri. Oct1st. Heard on and off for 2 hours, but the absolute clearest and best signal came at 1525UTC during Toto's Africa which is in this audio clip and gets REAL clear at about 1 minute 5 seconds into the clip. Audio: https://bit.ly/3Fe2Bix Distance: 7130 miles.

4TAB 1008kHz Brisbane, QLD, Aus at 1511UTC on Sat. Oct 2nd with live horse racing action. The audio gets real good right after the start of the recording. Audio: https://bit.ly/3iq5gvJ Distance: 6850 miles

A3Z 1017kHz Nuku'alofa, Tonga at 1531UTC on Fri October 1st with female talking in english and Tongan at some special event live broadcast. Audio: http://bit.ly/3A5uztk Distance: 5910 miles

4RN 792kHz Brisbane, QLD, Aus at 1519UTC on Fri Oct 1, 2021 with some american radio show, featured american accents. Audio: http://bit.ly/2YmE22j Distance: 6850 miles

2KP 684kHz Kempsey, NSW, Aus between 1500 and 1600UTC on Sat. Oct 2nd, 2021 with several fade ups, including some Aussie accented english and a song during. There are three 684's in Australia but all were running separate programming at the time and I was able to match what I had to the ABC Mid North Coast webstream, which was running "Nights with Indira Naidoo". Audio clip #1 (with speech): https://bit.ly/3ozvHTX Audio clip #2(with music): http://bit.ly/3BccCdO Distance: 7090 miles

CNR1 945kHz Jiaohe, China at 1400 to 1500UTC on Wed. Sept 29, 2021 with a massively clean, clear, strong signal carrying basketball play by play in Chinese. Signal was so good, I widened audio to 3kHz and could hear the shoes squeaking as players went up the court! Audio clip #1: bit.ly/2Y7gbTX Audio clip #2: 2WHfgJG Distance: "only" 3100 miles.

"Star" 657Khz New Zealand at 1400 to 1530UTC on Mon Sept 20, 2021. Heard with several fade ups including the best one at 1412UTC with a song and some english chatter. Audio: https://bit.ly/39YY4SZ Distance: "could be 7130 miles" Not known exactly which transmitter I heard, as two exist, Wellington and Tauranga but based upon reception behavior the fact I hear Magic on 1107 from Tauranga regularly, I'm "going with" that transmitter though I have heard ZB on 1035kHz from Wellington, just not very often.

Radio Kerman 1062kHz Kerman, Iran at 1506UTC on Mon Sept 20, 2021 Heard with a language I didnt initially recognize in the beginning and U had to run back in to use the "Facilities" so I left it recording. Came back out a few minutes later and the signal was gone. Upon review inside in the warm comforts of my apartment, and thanks to a RealDX member, we heard a reference to Iran and caught that this was Arabic language being spoken. 1062 here is usually Turkey Audio: https://bit.ly/3FoxzF0 Distance: 5750 miles
