Alaska AM DX

I know these are shortwave stations, but what AM stations do you receive in central Alaska?
My Grundig Yachtboy receives short wave, but am curious which AMs come in there day and night?
Am assuming few daytimers, except for locals. But at night, skywave extends AM signals.

They, um.. are not shortwave.. its all AM stations. Where did you get the idea theyre shortwave? It's all labeled with am frequencies

I dont care much about am in the daytime

I merely inquired about nighttime skywaves from the U.S.
I wasn't aware frequencies like 1179, 1053, 936, 1026, 1449, etc., were AM frequencies.
I'm new to this and am use to 800, 810, 820, etc.

the rest of the world operates on 9khz channels 531, 540, 549, 558, and so on. some 10khz us/canadian channels fall on 9 khz channels too.

I dont spend alot of time dxing at night, just daytimes before sunrise... ive heard as far east as CFAJ 1220 st Catharines, ontario and as far south as XEW 900 Mexico City

I will have to scan for stations in the 9khz range from here in central Texas, just north of Austin.
So far, all I get here at night are U.S. clear channels and regionals.
But... the reception here is far better than in Fla., where I recently relocated from.

I have played with the dial a little, changing from the 10khz to the other on this Grundig Yacht Boy 400. I wondered why the channel spacing was different.

In the unlikely event you get trans-atlantic or trans=pacific stations from Texas, you'll hear a loud whistle on 10kHz spacing stations.

I tried tonight, with 1khz spacing, to find stations from 540 to 1200. Nothing.
The Grundig Yacht Boy 400 spaces 1khz, 5khz to 10khz, IIRC.

The YB400 is 1khz and 10khz by pushing the step button. If you want to change it to 9khz, turn the radio off. Press AM then STEP. The display will change to 9khz. You can change it back to 10 by repeating the same.

There's not a separate band with 9kHz spacing where you get different stations in the same geographical area. You would have to be on the coasts at the right time of day, or outside the Americas. But again, they occupy the same spectrum space.

on just a portable with no external antenna, youre not likely to get much of anything, even a hetrodyne on a 9khz channel. you would need a more sensitive radi oand external antenna.

I was thinking Dondd might be under the impression switching to 9kHz spacing makes it the equivalent of changing to a different band

I guess I probably should have added that although the radio can tune in 9khz steps, doesn't mean it's useful in most of North America. NA uses 10khz steps, Europe and Asia tune in 9khz steps. Doubtful that you are going to pick up any 9khz stations in Texas.

Sidenote: When I bought my YB400 in the 90s it came from the factory set to 9khz spacing. I'm not sure but I'm thinking it was probably manufactured in Europe. It has been a great little radio over the years and still works as perfectly as the day I bought it.

So... what AM U.S. stations come into Alaska at night, via skywave?
I remember on an Art Bell program, he once said the signal for 1500 KSTP in Minneapolis "goes up over the arctic."

yes.. ive heard 1340 Oroville, CA.. 1490 Kelso, WA... 1400 Berkley, CA..... 1230 near Seattle.... i dont really pay attention to the big guns, cuse theyre so normal. I do hear plenty of lower 48 stations at night

KRLD 1080 Dallas at 1204am AK time Sun 1-2-22 with news, weather, traffic and several NewsRadio KRLD Menitons. Pretty decent signal fading up pretty clear for a Minute or two from 3257 miles away.

Also, a very very strong, very clear XEPRS 1090 on 1-1 with NONE of the usual chatter from KFNQ Seattle. Also on 1-1, KEHH 1400 Eureka, CA pounding in for a minute or two

Also heard a pretty strong/clear 1350 KSRO Santa Rosa CA and 1420 KITI Centralia, WA ... .The CBC on 1010 Calgary, 860 Prince Rupert BC, 1010 KIQI, 1310 KLIX, 1290 KIMA, 1370 KRAC, 1540 KXPA and 880 Edmonton

Nice catches especially XEPRS and KRLD.

Which clear channel skywaves and regionals (i.e. 860, 920, 1050, 1190, etc.) come in regularly?

Depends where you are. You might go through the Frequency of the Week posts.

In Knoxville TN the clears I get would be WSM, WSCR, WLW, WOR (mixed with Cuba)m WGN, CFZN, WSB, WJR, WABC, WBBM, WGY, WBAP, WCCO, WHAS, CBC French Toronto, WWL, WCBS, WLS, CBW, WMVP, KDKA, WBZ, WHO, KYW, WTIC/KRLD, WTAM, WRVA, WHAM, WOAI, WPHT, WHKW, WLAC, WCKY, KXEL

KEX is pretty decent most night, KFBK bombs in almost like a local almost every night. KNZR is fairly audible here. The CBC on 860 from BC is audible here.

Ummmm..... CHMJ 730 is pretty loud here at times, so is 1320 and 1470 also from Vancouver, along with 1040.

I could go on, i dont keep total, great track

Paul, how strong are Seattle AMs up there? Are there some that never make it even though they are decent power? What about eastern/southeastern WA stations? What's the normal occupant on 1280, 1460, 610?
