There was very little "live" top 40 on FM in the market during this time, but it is interesting to note to Rock 99, WGFM was ranked as one of the top rated automated stations in the country during this time period. TM from Dallas promoted them heavily in ads in Billboard Magazine, touting them as one of the top stations using its' "TM Stereo Rock" format.

I was a teenager at the time, and although I liked 'TRY and 'PTR (AM top 40 teen-oriented 'screamers'), it was great to hear ALL the music (without someone screaming over the song) and to hear the songs in STEREO on a great FM signal. FLY '92 at that time was also automated, but its' signal and processing was much poorer than Rock 99. Plus, Rock 99 had ALL of the WGY newsroom and airstaff doing news and PSA's! (Harry Downie, George L. Davis, Jack Arnekee, Dick Beach, Paul Cassidy, etc.).

Remember the format? 15 minute music segments with 2 currents, backannounced, a jingle, then a gold cut and a recurrent. After a small set of commercials, it would begin again. The oldie selection was particularly good...what today would be called a mix of "classic rock" and R & B. I still have the old cue sheets and airchecks from the master gold reels (26 cuts on each - 23 reels total) as well as the recurrents (23 cuts on 8-10 reels). Ahead of it's time in music selection, IMHO.

Thanks for the memories!
