Albany Needs Another Rock Station *DELETED*

Re: Albany Needs Another Rock Station

You should try listening to 104.9 The New Edge, old stuff, new stuff....rare songs that you wont hear on channel and eqx, and Q 103 which play's Autograph and Def Leppard constantly. Pyx 106...oh there still on the air????? I urge you to check the station out I listen everyday now....best rock in the capital region as far as im concerned right now.
Edited by bw on 03/24/06 11:39 AM.

Re: Albany Needs Another Rock Station

Channel should choose if they want to be active or alt. They do have some jocks that are appropriate to the format but they play way too much Nickleback. Who is the target audience here? They have no deep cuts, a playlist that seems bipolar, and their local music efforts are half @ss.

What was once an oasis for good music, EQX has resorted to playing an excess of crap. They won't get off Matisyahu (sp), the 80s bands with new stuff is unlistenable and if they are so independent and alternative why is it you never heard Death Cab (who suck) until they were mainstream and popular. How many times can the "real" alt play nine inch nails a day. Their playlist is as deep as a dixie cup. How about more indie stuff? What about something deep for once that isn't Bob Marley.

Q103...there's something wrong with you if you listen to it. Period.

PYX--still on the air, eh?

The Bone...JR is the only reason to tune in, aside from him no reason.

104.9 The Edge...I have to say this is a surprise. The playlist goes deeper than any other rock station and hopefully it works out in their favor. I'd like to see this station make it.

Re: Albany Needs Another Rock Station

EQX is circling the drain. Just about impossible to listen to. Not relevant. Tired play list. Needs dramatic changes, or needs a lethal injection. I hate corporate radio, but I find myself listening to the channel more than EQX.

I agree. JR is good.

104.9 is the one to watch. Not bad so far.

Re: Albany Needs Another Rock Station

Hmmm...you guys are kind of lucky up there in Albany. I used to live in New Paltz, and at least there was one alternative station (WRRV), and WDST for AAA. In Albany, aren't there three now? Here in Philly, there are NO stations that play new rock at all, except for WXPN which is run by the Univ. Of PA. Sirius is the only way to get modern rock. It baffles me that in some major markets there are no stations playing new rock. Kind of goes against the principle that advertisers want younger audiences.

The Bone is playing the best variety of everything that rocks. The New Edge does not come close to the playlist range of The Bone. Also...they waited too long to flip formats. They should have done it as soon as The "old" Edge stupidly flipped to Q103...within 24 hours.
Edited by bw on 03/24/06 11:40 AM.

OK, first, The Real Alternative tag is merely imaging-everyone knows that. If you want true "Alternative", you really need to listen to a college radio station. That being said, WEQX has done a fantastic job over the last 18 months or so providing listeners with a broad range of inventive music. I don't personally care for Matisyahu either but many people do-the CD debuted at number 6 last week. As for "80's" artists, EQX currently has 80 or so songs listed as New Music(which are all either active or recurrent). Of those 80 cuts, SIX OF THEM feature artists that were on the radio in the 80's, and with the exception of U2, Depeche Mode, and Simple Minds, these are mostly alt/college staples. As for Death Cab, this is their first major release in 2.5 years-ie, the first release in the current PD's tenure. DC side project The Postal Service got plenty of airplay last winter, so its not like they just got told by some consultant that they need to start playing more Death Cab. More indie stuff?? There's four hours of primarily independent fare every Sunday night starting at 7pm.. What does radio not need? How about a dozen or more bands that sound like Green Day or Blink 182?? turn on any heavily consulted alt station and that's exactly what you'll hear-"Phone it in" mentality indeed.

Albany May Not Need Another Rock Station

If you like Rock radio, this for whatever reason,is one of the best markets for it! We have four Classic Rockers, including WNYQ, two Modern Rock stations,
and an Active Rocker, with the new Edge. Go south 150 miles to NYC, and there is ONE Rock station, period! We have seven! I am not really aware of any other medium or major markets, that have this kind of diversity of rock radio, and each of the stations, is pretty unique and different from any of their competitiors. They are all well programmed too!!! Read some of the comments on the New York or Philadelphia radio boards, and you will quickly conclude, that they wish they had, what we have up here!

Re: Albany May Not Need Another Rock Station

It's more like a bad game of musical rock radio chairs except someone keeps forgetting to take a chair out after the music stops...

Re: Something New

My hat is off to you FMAM! Too many people on this board bitch and complain, speculate and make personal attacks. It's nice to see something new here and find someone with a positive outlook on things.

However, this is STILL considered a very bad RADIO market by industry standards.
There isn't enough diversity in formats in this market and it is labeled a "boring" market. It's sad, but you will see many bigger markets take some chances and try a "new" format. If there is a format change iminent on a frequency it's like a "hmmmm....what kind of ROCK format can I do?". There can only be so many ways to slice a pie with that format.
