Albany NPR Station Adds New York City Simulcast

I was driving through the area, it's pretty limited in signal. 200 watts, vertical only. Why they went vertical only in Westchester I don't know, there's no channel 6 to protect. Anyway, it's a pretty small signal, so I don't think it will have much of an impact when WNYC is easily heard.

Listeners in the Mount Kisco area of Westchester County area of New York City can now hear a relay of WAMC - the NPR station serving the state capital - on 89.9 FM:

Would be interesting to see how this one fares in the PPM's.

Correction.... it is on 88.9, NOT 89.9 . I think the folks at WKCR/89.9 (Columbia University) would take exception to anyone stepping on their turf. Out of curiousity, isn't the market (Westchester County) already served by several other NPR affilates? No doubt it will be a 100% clone of WAMC.

When did Westchester County become part of New York City?

THAT'S news to me. Considering that the time-sharers, WFDU/89.1 in Teaneck, NJ and WNYU/89.1 New York cover most of the 5 Boroughs of New York City, I highly doubt that WWES/88.9 could ever be a true "New York City" market station. But I'm sure Mr. Chartock will find a way to add yet another WAMC clone. Stay tuned...........

Peter, NYC gobbled up Brooklyn, I guess it could annex Westchester, too. :D

And Alan seems to be good at expanding his empire, as well.

As long as we are picking nits: Seems like this is a repeater, not a "simulcast."

It's a full time repeater of WAMC on 88.9. It's a toehold in Northern Westchester, but not much more. WFRS beats up on it pretty good once you get south of Route 172.

The signal does not get out very far at all. Not much further than the WMNR translator that used to be there. From what I've read, that translator is headed to 89.5. Besides being vertical only, the topography is not all that friendly for a low HAAT and low powered signal.
