Albany Radio, Where Are They Now?

Who could forget Julius? Remember the time we hid his new car? Several years ago my significantly better half (wife) was involved in a project with Julius' wife. I kept hoping I would run into him again.

Julius was a one of a kind. He was a part of the fun we had there. Julius would always dance! Some other stuff: LIghting Tom Bryant's News copy on fire while he was live on the air with an update. Rick Williams' News-baru (his Subaru), opening the back door to the studio to give away tickets to Midnight shows and seeing about 500 people out there waiting. Going to the store during Paul Harvey to get some smokes and coming back hearing the tape break live on the air and the roaring silence one would hear while you try to figure out where you put the keys to the studio!

A few other people: Woody who used to rewind the tapes at WWCW at night. The kid down the road that always hung out with the staff and his dog that got along with the 'Station Dog'... Didn't we call the dogs Mike and Woof? Nancy the traffic lady.

There are too many to mention. Ohh, when Radio was fun and Creative.

How about Paris? She used to handle traffic for WKAK. She brought new meaning to the phrase spending April in .... nevermind.

That was back in the time when I didn't want to leave the station. I loved the people, the job heck even the smell of the place. On more than one occasion Mark would telll me to go home. Let us not forget ole Bulldog George, Chief etc. Not meaning to infringe on a copyright but "Those were the days."

It's called the "Gates" smell. I have smelled it from Fitzgerald to Hawkinsville to Perry and most places in between.

I had forgotten about her. Albany's version of Bailey Quarters!

How about Bill Burns? An old friend, whom I haven't heard of in ages, would've been a country air personality. His wife works/worked at Phoebe Putney.

Bill Burns passed away a year or so ago. I worked with him at WKAK in Albany, Ga.

Oh ... how I do hate to hear this .... I'm off to see if I can find how to convey my condolences to Cheryl and the family. :(

Dave Nethers here,
Reported News at WJAZ in Albany 1981 before moving on to WALB TV for my first tour of duty there. Does anyone know what happened to the likes of Gary Glover (Gabe McKenzie) or John Hart (Program Director and morning personality) who worked at WJAZ the same time I did. Some of you may have known John Benford, Big John, who wasnt a personality but worked at the station and later as a paramedic. Sadly he also has passed, a few years back.
Thanks for the post it brings back a lot of fun times working with Dave Miller (who when i started in radio i was CONSTANTLY confused with over the phone after i intoduced myself) Jackson Riley and the late Tom Bryant. I have been in Cleveland, Ohio for the past 11 years working at WJW Television, the Fox station here, Moved to West Palm Beach from Albany after the flood in 1994 and worked for the ABC Afilliate there contributing frequently to ABC News One for national stories from Miami like the Valujet crash and the murder of deigner Gianni Versace.

Hi Dave, Scott Cason here. Don't know if you remember me, but I was the sat truck operator at channel 10 before I left for Savannah right after you took Mark McClure's place. I'm just down the road from you in Louisville Kentucky.

How do you like those Cleveland winters?!

Dave Miller is the walb web master "bye cicles , space cadets" that was his sign off every day at walg
Kurt Baker is at b100 ... from the 92 waze days with steve preston

Paris lives on the lake near Warick
Bulldog George lives around the corner from my mom, he is hanging in there.
Mellow Mike mornings on southern soul a cumulus r & b - blues station. Mike's voice has been on the air longer than anyone ..early 70's
Ron Mani came to town for his wife's high school reunion. He is still on the Sun Coast near Sarasota
Johnny Holiday aka Gary Stevens left wmtm and went out west
and me jaxon riley ASU Telecomuncations ... media com cable 19 with bill young denson, I'm also a temp for cumulus remotes.

Well I know it's late, but I do have a couple of answers to questions about where are they now..Gary Glover is in Washington, DC. After leaving Albany he joined the army for a 2nd time, traveled the world as an AFRTS broadcaster, and then after retirement worked for Voice of America, and from time to time now shows up on my morning show here in Beaumont, Texas. I hired Gary (more like forced him to take the gig) at 1250 WQDE. He got there, I left for Houston. When I was in Albany, I was PD at WQDE and used the name Jeff Dugan.

Was wondering if anyone knows why Kurt Baker left B-100 recently and what is he doing now? Also, is Mellow Mike still doing radio in Albany? Just Curious. The jock formerly known as "Mustang" Mike Kelly

Mellow Mike was Laid off from Clear Channel. He moved to Cumulus in Albany just to be laid off over there. I think he is just doing club deals right now.

Mellow was and still is a really great guy. Hate to see that happen to him. It is ashame that someone that has been in the market and on the air as much as him is just tossed to the side. Young if you see him or talk to him, tell him that "Mustang" said hi. He worked with me right after WJIZ was purchased by Peterson Braodcasting.

Re: Albany Radio: Gabe says Hi, Dave

I was thinking about you just a few days ago & a friend of mine says somebody was wondering what happened to me. Short story: left Albany for Texas in "82, got fired from my next two radio jobs within months (God, I hate Texas millionaires) & rejoined the Army to keep the kids in macaroni. Got divorced, remarried & stayed in the Army where I produced radio & news programming at the Pentagon, spent 3 years in Germany supervising broadcasters & a year in Korea as boss of a radio / TV op for Uncle Sam. Left the Army for health reasons in '96, went back to school for awhile, then went back into government work as a radio news writer for Voice of America in DC in December '97. Took early retirement in 2003 and have done as little as possible since then. Turned 60 & celebrated my 25th wedding anniversary last month. Still have just two kids, but between them they managed to turn me into a granddad 8 times.

Last I heard about John Hart (which was decades ago) he was PD at a station in Chattanooga TN. What happened to you? E-mail me directly if you like at [email protected].
