Albany-Schenectady-Troy Interim Ratings: Feb-Mar-Apr 2011

Wow... WPTR is starting to make a splash in the ratings (but both it and WTRY are up, are people listening to both?)

B95 also bounces back up against the River, GNA tied with WGY... cracked up at WKLI being under 1.0 (please flip to Classic Rock and give PYX a run for its money ;))

I noticed all of that too. WPTR is definitely climbing...but WTRY is certainly maintaining. Funny...the "experts"....always tell us that Oldies is a dead format too. Also...WKLI should absolutely flip to Classic Rock and go after PYX at this point. Even the former WXCR (102.3) used to get a three share from their Clifton Park site when they were in competition with PYX. WKLI covers the metro better than 102.3 does from its Guilderland transmitter site...and there is no excuse for such a waste of a good facility...unless they are using it as a tax write off....

Don't mean to piddle in the punchbowl, but it's a trend. Persons 12+. About 300 diaries in a rolling average. Hip hip hooray for the Oldies/Classic Hits stations. Great format. Sorry to say, the demos for these stations are largely 50+. "These Eyes" and "Old Fashioned Love Song" are 40 years old. Great songs, no doubt, but a bit crispy. Classic Hits has to play format compatible songs from the 80s or the format's dead in two years. Again. Country is the real format. It attracts all demos, 18-64 and it's just as contemporary as CHR.

I'm surprised at how well WROW does with its standards/soft AC hybrid... reminds me of KIXI in Seattle almost (could Benfer have been inspired by KIXI when putting the Magic format on AM? I'd probably rebrand the station as "59 WROW" myself though...)

Also, as long as CC owns Kiss, it'll never be flipped (ok, rhythmic lean a few years, adult lean a few years, etc. but still top 40) even with low ratings ;)

But, what format would work on 100.9? I still say Classic Rock (chip away at PYX, but probably wouldn't kill it) or perhaps a WKBE simulcast (modern AC is making a comeback) :)

Classic Hits might work on 100.9 but how about some kind of Modern and Classic Dance? It's a format that can appeal to ALL ages. As an classic Baby Boomer I love Disco(really) but I can enjoy dance/electronic sounds of all decades up to today. Why copy when you can do something original?

If WKLI even flipped to the satellite delivered Classic Hits format that they use on co-owned WNYQ 101.7 up in Glens Falls...they would do vastly better than they are doing now....
