as a dj in the early 70's on AM radio, i was unaware of longer versions of songs..had heard CCR "grapevine" , and 'light my fire' on 8 track..but didn't know much else and we didn't play those anyway..except the short version pf light my fire..eventually started hearing longer versions of songs when we would get promo singles at the station and one side would have a short version..usually mono..the other side a long version in stereo..the short side was always played as a rule to get more music in an hour already loaded with spots...strangely mcarthur park was played without question at the time..usually as a "bathroom" tune..lol...and it's still one of my all time favorites..i always play the long version on my internet stream as thats what listeners like...recently stumbled on a long version of SANTA ESMERALDA'S " Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"...and it is stunning...

I saw Eric Burden two years ago and he sang the Santa Esmeralda version Intro, complete with hand clapping and then transitioned into the Animals version(Original version by Nina Simone)....added bonus original Animals guitarist "Hilton Valentine" appeared with him.

When I was at a top 40 station in the Riverside-San Bernardino market and Light My Fire was a current hit we played the short version days and the long one at night. Likewise for the Iron Buttefly.

I was shocked to hear "Light My Fire" on standards radio--obviously it was the short version--but it turned out to be Jose Feliciano.

I seem to recall an edit of MacArthur Park that cut most of the uptempo instrumental bridge. I can remember CKLW bailing out on Hey Jude as soon as the second "na na na na" started in drive time.

Oh, wait, one standards station I used to listen to had the long version of "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" by Chicago. This was not a good thing, in my opinion. If you want to rock I suppose it is.

The playlist of a new soft adult contemporary station lists "Hard to Say I'm Sorry/Get Away".

The record I have, the 45, has "We Will Rock You" on the B-side. In Fact it never charted, except as a B-side to "We Are The Champions". So in November of '77 when the record was being played on a top-40 station, only "We Are the Champions" was likely played. The idea of playing the two back-to-back was exclusive to Album Radio, because the two songs are feature consecutively on the album, "News Of The World". So, if a Classic Hits station plays one without the other, I see nothing wrong with that.

Top 40s started playing "We Will Rock You" along with "Champions" while it was still on the charts. The idea of playing them both back-to-back may have originated on AOR, but it was certainly not exclusive to them.

One of the few times I recall my local top 40 playing "Rock You" without "Champions" was during the hour immediately after AT40 had aired. "Champions" was in the top 10 at the time, and had just been played during the previous hour, so they aired "Rock You" without it.

It annoys me that no one plays the album version of "Play That Funky Music," but they will play album versions of other past hits, even when those are longer than the album version of "Play That Funky Music"!

There are other exceptions like this too: radio usually plays the early fadeout version of "That's the Way I Like It" by KC & the Sunshine Band, but will usually play the long fadeout version of "Stayin' Alive" by the BeeGees (which they didn't play back when it was a hit).

The short 3 minute "Beginnings" is absolutely worthless..the middle extended horn section and samba fadeout MUST be played. There's nothing like it!

Does anyone remember the short version of Slow Ride by Foghat that used to be on AM radio. I never liked that one. The way that song is written it is supposed to slowly build up to a massive climax (literally). When it premature fades out, it sound like something else was premature.

Wasn't there also a short version of Black Betty by Ram Jam? I heard that song years ago on AM and didn't hear the song again on the radio for at least 25 years. It could be my imagination but the version heard today sounds different. where could i hear the short version if it exists?

I have a single edit also....2:28 length, like you, am not sure if it's the 45 edit, mine is off a cd.
