Albuquerque's 103-7 The Oasis

At the Labor of Love we call 103-7 The Oasis, we have essentially blacklisted Kenny G (he only appears with other artists on just two songs in our library). His music and persona instantly brands a station very negatively and old. By the way, the phrase "Smooth Jazz" is blacklisted for the same reasons. While we are not blowing the doors off in overall numbers, we are indeed coming in younger than conventional Smooth Jazz stations used to. We are Arbitron subscribers, find our demos and psychographics very saleable, and are getting some traction on agency buys now (frequently by client mandate) and are paying the bills at 11 months into the project. Our signal is a 250 watt translator at 5,000 feet above Albuquerque, generating a C3+ level signal over the market. Working with Steve Hibbard, our PD, and the *entire* on and off air staff is such a pleasure. Website upgrade coming soon (thankfully), but check out our stream at www.1037theoasis.com. Indeed, Radio *can* be fun today :)

I love 103.7 The Oasis! You guys have a great playlist and it doesn't sound Allen Kepler at all. Katie Cole and Steve Hibbard do very good hosting. The new Sunday afternoon woman (Janet?) is good as well with her skills. You've played some stuff my former KWJZ wouldn't TOUCH! Keep playing the Alex Bugnon, Special Efx, Al Jarreau, and Incognito!

What happened to all those different styles of music you promised? No Newage. No chill. No world music. Ya know, I wish the folks at Oasis would explain themselves.
Signed,
Disappointed Listener.

sorry for the disappointment, but i think the oasis rightfully discovered that straight-ahead smooth jazz is still the most bountiful way to run their operation, and they've put together a killer sounding playlist in doing so. the chill and world music sounds intriguing, but as WQCD found in their short-stint running a smooth jazz/chill mix, when you try to appeal to a bunch of different audiences, you end up satisfying no one.

KWJZ aired a Smooth/Chill format for the last couple years of it's SJ life, before KLCK and the Hot AC/Alternative mix. I was hearing Moby about every day on that station, and it aired Mindi Abair's "Chill" program as well.

Mabye a word of explanation - when we came on last Valentine's Day, we wanted to start up as "all-hit radio", playing the music that was popular on the former "Horizon" so the people who were abandoned in New Mexico by the format would feel immediately at home. We just had an all-staff meeting this week to discuss and plan the next musical level for KOAZ, so check in from time to time as we open up the styles a bit. Actually, the Latin guitar category has pretty good representation now.

I listened to the Oasis for 15 minutes and it sounds like happy upbeat music. Sounds good although I like jazz with a funky beat better. I agree with your opinion of Kenny G.....he sounds like snake charmer music.

This station reminds me of KOAI a bit. I like. I may add it to my iTunes listening rotation.

Is this the same Janet Birchfield who used to host the Sunday Jazz Brunch on 99.9 FM WQRC in Hyannis MA????

Used to listen all the time when I owned a cottage in West Yarmouth on the Cape.

Wow I still use the WQRC Sundy Jazz Brunch coffee cups I won years ago.

Happy 1st Birthday to the Oasis! Wanted to give the shout out. Still listening daily to 103.7 from Washington state online! Keep spinning that Al Jarreau, Incognito, Richard Elliott, Dave Koz, Vincent Ingala and Special Efx! Lovin' it!

Wow, we wish you could come to our birthday party - at the Andaluz Hotel downtown. We will have our new website up soon - and will likely have pictures of the party. It will be interesting to learn how the turnout is! Big turnout or not, WE are having fun! Regards, Don

Sure wish I could fly my wings and end up in ABQ tonight - but...that's not gonna happen with me being almost 1200 miles away as the crow flies! Hope you guys have fun - and remember you have listeners all over the country now! Your station reminds me of the old 98.9 KWJZ here in Seattle, without the Kenny G. A good mix of music, some titles I have never heard of but hopefully you guys will get a streaming playlist going very soon.

Yes - On weekends, that's the same Janet Birchfield that hosted The Sunday Jazz Brunch on 99.9 WQRC years back. I still have those coffee mugs, as well! I like her style. It's a little more personable and a lot less "out of the box" on a station that is still trying to get its feet on the ground. I think that now that the station will also be heard in Santa Fe on 95.9, there will be much improved ratings in the ABQ spring book. I think they're doing a good job and I happen to like Steve Hibbard's programming. I'm sticking with it.

OK - where did you find out that KOAZ is getting a 95.9 translator now? I don't see anything.

Press release just recently came out on the new Santa Fe frequency. Don't know how many outlets ran the release, but it's definitely on the air. They are also just now repeating the additional dial position in the dj breaks on 103.7, so I would think it's official.

I just returned from a 3-week cross-country trip (From Maine to San Diego and back) I have a good friend in Albuquerque, and had never visited there before. I tuned in the Oasis about 50 miles west of ABQ along I-40 and enjoyed it very much. While leaving ABQ enroute to Colorado Springs, I was disappointed that the signal faded out just a half-hour north of ABQ along I-25, but considering the terrain i wasn't surpirsed. The station was definitely a breath of fresh air. I listened to a LOT of AM/FM radio on the trip, and really was disappointed with so many stations. Thankfully I had plenty of CDs. But KOAZ "The Oasis" was great to listen to.

The addition of Santa Fe may help sales, but the city (and county) are not in the Arbitron Albuquerque market. So listening in the Santa Fe area does not add to ABQ ratings.
