Alex Jones... Bigger Ratings Than Rush?

Brad Crandall

His voice lives on in Episode 1:10 of "WKRP in Cincinnati," "A Date with Jennifer," as the voice of the "Mister Macho" wig commercial.

Off topic. Sure wish they would loosen up and release all of the WKRP episodes with the original music. Another casualty of the digital age. Sorry for misspelling Crandall's last name. Alex Jones should look up and listen to some of his shows (if they're even available). Prime example of engaging broadcating.

I admired Crandall. The exact opposite of Joe Pyne, Alex Jones, Producer Guy and anybody else who "hang(s) up on those idiots (and) publicly ridicule(s) them" and then calls it "engaging an audience."

About the time of WKRP, a decade after his show on WNBC, he was the voice over guy for CBS television (sort of their Ernie Anderson). He had great pipes but voice aside, he was a great talk show host and great talk show hosts are much harder to find than good booth announcers. He died young (age 62 in 1991 of kidney failure). He actually listened to people who called. The only other host I've heard who really "engaged" with people on the air is Michael Jackson. Not sure why he gave up on talk radio early on but I wish he'd stayed with it. Maybe the problem is the mindset of those in the industry who think "engaging" people is being dogmatic and insulting (of course, with a right-wing tea, party slant).

Doug Stephan engages with his lsiteners and doesn't have a strident political stance. While his show is cleared decently, it doesn't pull blockbuster numbers, although I enjoy it.

I agree about Larry King on the radio. I was sorry when he gave up that gig to focus on TV only.

Doug Stephan is an absolute bore. Not because he doesn't express his political opinion but because he doesn't seem to have an opinion about anything. "I'm Doug Stephan ... good morning! Here's news story #8 ... good morning! Bla bla bla ... good morning!" Yawn.

You don't need to have an opinion to have a successful radio show. But you have to have a purpose. I haven't heard Uncle Dougie for years, but purpose seemed to be the missing element the last time I listened.

For Jones to claim he "destroys" Limbaugh when going head-to-head with him doesn't even seem possible. When going head-to-head, Limbaugh is probably on a class A 50,000 watt clear channel AM station, and Jones is on a dinky 1,000 watt class D AM station.

I guess you can claim anything if you won't be made to back it up with data.

The purpose of Stephan's show is to discuss the issues of the day. He also analyzes how other shows are addressing topics. This strikes me as a good purpose. If the show isn't cleared in your area and you're interested, his show is archived at www.dougstephan.com

It's a pretty balanced show, I like it.

Back to Jones, perhaps he's 'killing' Rush in a demographic he alone tracks. Like I've written, he has an appeal to a very limited slice of the population. Beyond that, not so much, but he's making it work by serving that segment so I won't begrudge him that.

Married With Children without Sinatra singing the theme was the last straw for me. I stopped watching all of those old shows.

Wow! That stepped on a nerve.

I'm not sure how you quantify purpose with data.

Again, I haven't listened to the show for many years. I go back to when he had Ellen Ratner on his show every day I believe in the 8 eastern hour and some lady named Mary (forget the last name) in the 7 o'clock hour. It was also during the time he broadcast from Morocco. In those days, it sounded like Doug was subleasing his show by the hour or even segment with him as the primary host and there was no sense of continuity or purpose of the show.

I'll have to listen at the link to see how it's changed if it has changed.

BTW, are you affiliated with Uncle Dougie? (I go back to when someone made the Uncle Dougie jingle for him.)

@del_griffith

Nope, not affiliated with Stephan in the least. I only discovered his show this year and liked it. I only brought it up here as an example of how an issues oriented, non-partisan talk show can still be viable today although, granted, he's not pulling in nearly the ratings of a Limbaugh or Hannity.

Both is "Good Day" show as well as his "Talk Radio Countdown" program are syndicated by GCN - which, of course, also syndicates the show hosted by the subject of this very thread.
